Posted: 31 Oct 2011 03:50 PM PDT

Wow, that was fast! As we reported last week, Google planned to start pushing out the Android 3.1 update to Sony branded Internet TV boxes and televisions starting this week. Today, select Sony devices have already received the update, unleashing multiple new features for the Google TV experience.

Although Logitech boxes are further down the roll-out schedule, today I was sent an email reassuring me that my Revue box would not be forgotten about:

Hello,

Thank you for having purchased a Google TV product with the initial version of our software.

We're excited to send you this advance notice about a number of software improvements that will soon be coming to your device through an automatic update. The update is rolling out over the next few weeks. Read More…

Samsung Galaxy S Gets Alpha Ice Cream Sandwich Build

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 03:38 PM PDT

The next phone on the list to get an unofficial upgrade appears to be the Samsung Galaxy S. Two MIUI developers decided to take a break from MIUI in order to port Android 4.0 to the Galaxy S. And guess what? They were successful. And by successful, I mean very little is working and it is so unstable that they haven’t even released it to the public yet. But hey, you gotta start somewhere, right? Developers only really have the option to make half baked versions of ICS because Google has released the Source Code yet (just the SDK). But if you want an early build of ICS on your Galaxy S, stay tuned!

ASUS Transformer Prime set to be announced or launched on November 9

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 01:41 PM PDT

According to a Q3 investor document from ASUS, they have listed their new Transformer Prime as coming November 9.  Unfortunately we don’t know if that’s a release date or when it will be officially announced, but I am expecting the latter. We have already seen the keyboard dock leak so we are definitely close.

You will also notice that they have confirmed Ice Cream Sandwich and a Quad-core processor which is the Tegra 3. They also mention two other devices scheduled for Q1 2012. Could that be the Padfone and a followup to the Slider?

Barnes & Noble has a “Very Special Announcement” Next Week

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 10:25 AM PDT

We now have some further proof to yesterday’s post about Barnes & Noble releasing a new color Nook eBook. B & N has sent out press invites requesting attendance for a “very special announcement” that includes breakfast as well. I sure hope they have a huge venue!

Most likely the announcement will be the Nook 2 and its proposed November 7th launch. Oh, and don’t forget that B & N is adding a new “Nook Boutique” within stores to help bolster the in-store hands-on Nook experience.

All this and just a week before the Kindle Fire starts shipping to people’s doorstep. What do you think, does Amazon have some stiff competition heading their way?

Quick Peek at Today’s Free Amazon App: The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 09:58 AM PDT

Today’s free Amazon app is a little different than what we usually see on a daily basis. What you get today, is a free interactive children’s book in app form, and given the today’s holiday, The Legend of Spookley the Square Pumpkin, is quite fitting.

This bookapp, as I will refer to it, was written by Joe Troiano and illustrated by Susan Banta and tells the tale of Spookley, a square pumpkin living in a round world. Throughout the story, Spookley, deals with harsh peers and is shunned because of his shape. This bookapp delivers a special message of tolerance and self-acceptance that’s just right for Halloween or any day of the year. Read More…

LG Clears up Optimus 2X/G2X Android 4.0 Update Rumors

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 08:33 AM PDT

Yesterday, we reported that the LG Optimus 2X and G2X would not actually be candidates for the Android 4.o Ice Cream Sandwich update. Well, it looks like the rumor mill jumped the gun on this one as LG sent word to our buddies over at Android and Me explaining the official plan for the devices.

Apparently LG is still in testing, determining whether or not the devices are physically capable of running the new OS. Even if they can operate under Android 4.0, LG’s main concern is that the user experience is a good one. We consumers can appreciate that, right? We apologize for misleading you and will let you know when we hear more.

London Taxi Cabbies Launch Service for Android Phones

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 08:11 AM PDT

Anyone who has tried to hail a cab knows how frustrating and difficult it can be. However, cabbies in London are aiming to make the process easier. A group of London cab drivers are collaborating together to launch a new cab service called Hailo which will allow users to call a cab with just a few taps on your Android phone.

The clever app uses your phone’s GPS to locate nearby cabbies and how close they are. Any free driver available would then be able to accept your fare. The app gives you pertinent details such as your driver’s name and vehicle registration. For added convenience, you will even have the ability to pay your fare with your credit card. Hailo will be available for free starting tomorrow, November 1.
