It’s Official – HP TouchPad is History

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 04:38 PM PDT

Bummer news for those who were hoping to pick up a new HP TouchPad at fire sale prices only so you could port some Android goodness onto it. It looks as though the future is grim for the TouchPad and it has reached the end of it’s production.

With the majorly successful fire sale that HP had, all TouchPads at the discounted rate disappeared almost instantly. Although you can still find them places at full retail price, there was always the hope that HP would magically replenish stock and continue to sell the TouchPad at the discounted rates. HP even had a sign up page on their website leading consumers to believe that the TouchPad may eventually be resurrected.  Read More…

Motorola Devices Receive Possible Permanent Root

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 03:35 PM PDT

A new root method for Motorola devices has shown up on the interweb claiming that it may be a permanent solution. There is still the possibility that Moto will patch this method closed in future updates but if you are already rooted you might as well give it a try. It should only take a matter of minutes to complete and will work on most Motorola devices including the Bionic, Droid 3 and Droid X. Before you can start you need to be rooted and in case you aren’t, the directions can be found here. Once you have root you will just need to change a few lines in your “mount_ext3.sh” file using Root Explorer. Hit the break for full instructions. Read More…

Gingerbread Now Official For LG Revolution, Verizon Posts Change Log

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 12:15 PM PDT

It’s been a great day for LG Revolution owners. We heard earlier about a potential update for the Revolution, but Verizon has officially let the cat out of the bag by releasing their change log for the VS910ZV7 software update which includes the long-awaited Gingerbread 2.3. In addition to the standard Gingerbread features, the software update includes Email folders now displaying in the correct order and data now working correctly when toggling in Airplane mode among other things. Now that we have the change log, it should only be a matter of days before the update is officially pushed to Revolution devices. When you do receive the update, do tell us how it’s working out for you.

Full change log after the break:

[Video] Google TV 2.0 officially Announced – Updates to Begin Next Week

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 12:05 PM PDT

So apparently Google has been reading TalkAndroid and heard my frustration in yesterday’s post about the ongoing lack of the Android 3.1 update. This morning, Google made an announcement in the official Google TV blog and also released a YouTube video preview. The big G says “these are still early days, and we're working hard to move forward with each update”, so don’t plan on the first release to be a fully polished version. Personally, I will take anything at this point.

You can read the full blog post for yourself here, but the following statement pretty much sums up the roll-out process:

This software update will be coming to Sony devices starting early next week and Logitech devices soon thereafter. We look forward in the coming months to announcing new software updates as well as new devices on new chipsets from multiple hardware partners.

A few things you can expect to see once your device is updated will be:

  • A simpler user interface, with a customizable home screen.
  • Finding content becomes easier. TV and movies get their own search, whether they’re on Netflix, YouTube, Amazon, cable, satellite, etc.
  • Improved YouTube experience. Leanback was just the beginning. It’s now been integrated even deeper.
  • Apps. Finally, the Android Market comes to Google TV. You won’t initally have the full breadth of the market on Google TV — apps that require a touchscreen, GPS or telephony won’t show, so that pares things down quite a bit — but Google says it has 50 developers already lined up.

So for you Sony owners, be on the lookout over the next couple of weeks, if you own a logitech Revue, you and I will have to wait it out lust a little bit longer. Jump past the break to see that YouTube preview video I was talking about and let us know what you think! Read More…

Android TV with Gesture Recognition Technology In The Works

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 11:12 AM PDT

Hisense Group and eyeSight Mobile Technologies are teaming up to bring gesture recognition TVs to the consumer market. The best part is that it will be Android integrated. Hisense Group is a leading Chinese consumer electronics manufacturer, and eyeSight Mobile Technologies is a developer of touch free interfaces for digital devices. We told you about them back in June.

They have already released the Series XT710 in the Chinese market to mark the October 1st National Holidays. The gestures used to control the TV are seen with a 2D camera and reported as being very simple to operate. Can’t reach your remote? no problem wave your hand and the TV responds according to your gesture. They also report you’ll be able to play games on it using the gesture technology as well.   Read More…

LG Optimus 2x/T-Mobile G2X Will not be getting Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 11:04 AM PDT

LG has announced Ice Cream Sandwich will not be going out to the Optimus 2X or T-Mobile’s G2X.  The G2X runs on a Tegra 2 processor and could handle the update, however LG isn’t going to push the update. The LG Optimus 2X was introduced overseas as the first dual-core processor and then made its way to the states as T-Mobile’s G2X. The phones hardware is on par with some of the lower end tablets, so it is confusing as to why LG is unwilling to update it.

LG has been facing scrutiny from current customers about not getting any updates, and this is sure to add to that frustration. LG is a good manufacturer, but their lack of updates can’t be good for their bottom line. It was back in April that T-Mobile announced Gingerbread was in the works, but it took them until July to get it out to the masses.

How LG is staying afloat in the mobile market baffles me. Yeah they make good hardware, but the hardware is only as good as the software running on it.

With the constant fragmentation of the Android OS, this is another great phone meeting its end way too soon.

Are you an LG user? Tells us your frustration in the comments below.

Sprint CEO Hesse: iPhone Is More Data Efficient Than Android

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 08:38 AM PDT

The iPhone vs. Android debate is a never-ending debate and can be purely objective. However, Apple may have Sprint to thank  for manipulating prospective customers or those on the fence to use the Apple iPhone on the NOW network as opposed to an Android device. All Things D reports Sprint CEO Dan Hesse argues that “iPhone users are expected to use less 3G than the typical user of a dual-mode 3G, 4G device. Even adjusting for more total new customers being added to the network, we believe they will put less load on our 3G network than they would have if we did not carry the iPhone“. Read More…

HTC Security Threat Round 2

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 08:07 AM PDT

HTC just can’t win. No sooner than having plugged one security hole, another has been discovered.  TrevE over at InfectedROM has demonstrated the security lapse and even made an app that exploited the the lapse. Check out the video below to see how he did it.  The new threat is for all HTC devices running with the WiMax radio. (Yes Sprint customers that means you.)  The report states a malicious app can read your 4G network settings and even shut down the connection all together.  HTC and Sprint just released an update a few days ago to fix an issue with the Sense UI security holes. HTC makes some amazing phones but if they keep having security issues, I wonder if they can still lure customers in.  Are you an HTC/Sprint customer? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
