HTC Explorer Passes Through FCC, Launch Imminent Posted: 25 Oct 2011 05:44 PM PDT
It looks like we might see another budget friendly device hit the store shelves soon now that we have seen the HTC Explorer, formerly Pico, Pass FCC inspection. The phone was officially announced last month and HTC said it was initially heading to India and Europe. With the brief visit at the FCC, we can only guess it will land here in the U.S. as well. In case you forgot, the Explorer is a entry level device and the price should be very affordable based on the device's specs, it may even end up being free with a two-year contract but no exact price has been confirmed. Just to recap, some features to expect are: - 3.2-inch touchscreen with 320 x 480 resolution
- 600 MHz processor
- 512 MB internal storage
- 512 MB RAM
- 3 MP camera
- WiFi (802.11 b/g/n)
- Bluetooth 3.0
- 1230 mAh battery
Also with the new pairing of HTC and Dropbox, you can probably expect the device to receive a pre-loaded Dropbox app and new owners should get the upgraded 5GB of cloud storage as well. If you missed our article about the two companies teaming up offering extended cloud storage on new HTC devices, be sure to check it out. Also, if you feel so inclined you can see all the dirty details of the FCC visit here, jump past the break to see a quick HTC Explorer promo video as well. | HTC EVO 3D Security Update Rolling Out Posted: 25 Oct 2011 02:56 PM PDT
We knew the security fix was coming. While the details are scarce, the new 2.08.651.3 update will include security improvements for the EVO 3D. What the exact security improvements are is anyone's guess, but it's nice to see that HTC & Sprint are being proactive with the security of its customers. Hopefully the update will give us piece of mind for our Sense-powered handsets. If you can't wait, you can get the software update manually now by forcing a software update. The rest of the EVO 3D owners should receive the update OTA within the next few days. | i'mWatch – the newest contender in the Android watch lineup Posted: 25 Oct 2011 01:24 PM PDT
The tiny wrist computer has long been an element of our favorite science fiction films. While they have been implemented in the past, the results have always been rather rudimentary. Lately, however, companies seem to be trying to revive the old notion of this technology, and finally they are starting to produce some eye-catching results. First there was Sony Ericcson's LiveView. Then more recently Motorola unveiled the MOTOACTV, and now the latest contender is the i'mWatch. The i'mWatch is finally hitting on the core of what we all really want; a wrist computer. It is a cut above being a phone remote like the LiveView and less specialized that the MOTOACTV which is targeted at fitness. The watch of course runs Android and while it seems robust enough to stand on its own, it can pair with your phone to send and recieve calls or text messages as well as borrow the phone's internet. This watch also has the others beat in terms of apps, at least prospectively. It will feature its own app store hosting apps dedictated to the 240×240 screen. They also gave mention of a music subscription service to go along with it. The last thing that seems to bring the i'mWatch a cut above the rest is aesthetics. For one, it looks like a watch more so than the other two and it also has more class. The thing on my mind now is, how much is this going to cost. If I were going to choose among them, I think I would opt for the i'mWatch, but the price has to be right. I and plenty of others will immediately lose interest if this device surpasses $100, realistically I would probably pay up to $75 for this watch, but I doubt it will be priced as such. If the MOTOACTV's price is any indication, I suppose I'll be waiting a bit longer for my own smartwatch. The Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a hot topic around these parts, as we have all anxiously awaited its arrival. While it still isn't here yet, more info suggesting the speculative release date of November 10th has come to our attention. There are several online retailers offering pre-orders for the Nexus, but none with a definitive dates included until today. Phones4U.co.uk have it listed as "order today for delivery on 16/11". Do they know something we don't? Galaxy Nexus Preorders go live in the UK with delivery on November 16th | Garmin Gets Into Fitness Industry With First Fitness App, "Garmin Fit" Posted: 25 Oct 2011 11:46 AM PDT
Garmin is preparing to enter the fitness arena using its satellite technology coupled with your phone's GPS. We knew as early as last year that Garmin planned on developing applications for other mobile phones. The company just released their first fitness application for Android and iOS. According to Garmin's Dan Bartel, Vice President of Worldwide Sales: "Garmin Fit is the ideal solution for users who are new to the fitness tracking landscape and for those looking to stay totally connected. To be able to utilize Garmin's powerful fitness accessories with the same device that plays music, makes calls, and uploads workouts automatically to share and analyze, makes Garmin Fit a must have app". The ability to utilize Garmin's powerful fitness accessories and upload workouts automatically to share and analyze? Yes friends, the app will save your precious kilobytes of space on your Android and upload all pertinent data to the cloud using the (gratis) built-in Garmin Connect service. In addition, Garmin Connect promises to allow users to log workouts, track totals, set goals, and share workouts with friends and family. For some of us who love pictures (and most of us do!), there is the added ability to see the information through charts, illustrations, reports, and a variety of maps. The new Garmin Fit app for Android represents good value at 99¢ for the download. While the Android version lacks the accessories found on the iPhone version, it's still exciting to see a fresh take on apps and products to enhance our exercise experience without breaking the bank. You can find the QR code for the app below as well as some screen shots and the Presser after the break. A new platformer recently hit the market and it sure is a beauty. The amount of polish on this game is fantastic. Though the graphics may be a tinge on the cutesy side, be warned, this game can become a real challenge. The aim of the game is to guide your knight to the end of each level, all the while avoiding enemies and treacherous traps. Plus, you have to pick up winding keys along the way, or your knight will completely cease to sprint through the level. Wind-up Knight is free and offers 50 levels of some of the best graphics I've seen in Android games, all the while bringing some great gameplay mechanics. A lot of times I find that games on the phone are either too easy or too hard due to poor control. Wind-up knight hits the sweet spot by offering a difficult game with fluid and simple control. You won't be able to blame your death on anyone but yourself, noob. You'll probably want to run this on a higher spec phone or tablet.
