Nippon Announces New ‘Invisible Glass’ – Removes Annoying Glare

Posted: 29 Oct 2011 02:18 PM PDT

Booyah! What you see above is the possible future for our beloved smartphones and tablets - for all technology with screens for that matter!

What you are looking at is two variations of glass, the left being untreated and glare ridden, while the right, treated and virtually glare free. This new technology called “invisible glass” was developed by Nippon Electric Glass and hopefully device manufacturers team up with these geniuses sometime in the near future.

Studies show that regular glass reflects 8 percent of all light while the remaining 92 percent passes directly through it. This new “invisible glass” creates a huge difference and only reflects 0.5 percent of light, rendering the surface virtually glare-free. The glass is constructed with over 30 layers of special film on each side, each layer measured in mere nanometers. Read More…

Sprint Continues to Upset With the Blocking of WiFi Tethering Apps

Posted: 29 Oct 2011 01:08 PM PDT

It was a while back that carriers caught on and started blocking customers from downloading wireless tethering apps from the Android Market. You may still be able to tether via USB cable but the wireless method is now all but extinct. Sprint held out the longest allowing customers to use their phones in conjunction with a third-party app to serve as a free wireless hotspot. Those days are gone my friends, Sprint devices are now too blocked from downloading such apps from the Android Market.

This shouldn’t come as a surprise because the Now Network has already put a cap on 4G mobile hotspots and broadband usage, charging $.05 for every MB exceeded. If your device is rooted though, you still have an option for stickin’ it to the man. You can sideload the third-party apps by doing so directly from their websites, ie. WiFi Tether. So although it sucks and pisses us off, lets at least be thankful for all those great developers out there who always have our back in a pinch. Thanks guys, you rock!

Confirmed: Nook 2 arrives Nov. 7 – Barnes & Nobel to Add In-Store “Nook Boutique”

Posted: 29 Oct 2011 11:31 AM PDT

Barnes & Noble’s Nook line of eBook’s have been fairly popular with consumers, not only as a digital book but as an affordable tablet capable of running the Android OS. Sources say that the newest version of the device, the Nook 2, will beat Amazon’s Kindle Fire to market and will arrive in stores on November 7th. Along with the new unit, Barnes & Noble is said to revamp their stores adding a new “Nook Boutique” equipped with the latest technology and updated marketing materials. Leaks suggest that the new Nook section will be laden with LED TV’s and numerous working Nook display models giving the customer the opportunity to try out the device and make a purchase right on the spot.

Sources close to The Digital Reader say they have confirmed all but price and specs on the new unit, the store re-model and device landing are scheduled for November 7th. With no confirmed hardware details you can expect the Nook 2 to be relatively un-upgraded in order to keep price low and compete with the Kindle Fire. While it could have a slightly improved display or moderately improved processor, I wouldn’t expect any earth shattering specs here. The competition eBook’s would reflect that being lighter, thinner and a lower price point is the way to a customers heart. The possibility for root and Android goodness doesn’t hurt either!

[Quick Review] Pumpkins vs Monsters for Android [Video]

Posted: 29 Oct 2011 10:34 AM PDT

You don’t encounter a lot of apps that have been downloaded over 1,000,000 times with a  4.7 user rating. Pumpkins vs Monsters is one of those apps, and it’s a highly addictive game that is really fun to play. If you are a fan of games like Bejeweled or Plants vs. Zombies! you will love this one. Also, with Halloween only a couple of days away, it’s easy to get into, but I have a feeling your addiction will continue longer after you the ghosts and goblins have disappeared.

The premise is simple; You have an array of pumpkins, but you must match up the different colors in groups of at least three in order to flick them at the monsters that are coming at you. You can also collect coins and other gems in order to purchase other weapons, which you will need because this game gets challenging pretty quickly. You get the option to play story mode, which has up to 90 levels, or endless mode for hours of fun. My only complaint is when tapping the coins and gems (to collect), it’s not as responsive as I would like, but you may find a different experience depending on which device you’re using.

Download links and video after the break.

Quick Look At Amazon’s Free App of The Day: CandySwipe

Posted: 29 Oct 2011 10:04 AM PDT

Amazon’s free app of the day is another method of killing time. CandySwipe by Runsome, is a brain teaser similar to Bubble Popper, but with a twist. You see delectable treats such as Hershey’s Kisses, peppermints, candy apples, and gingerbread men among other sweet treats instead of bubbles. You simply swipe your finger left, right, up, down, or diagonally across matching pieces of candy without touching non-matching pieces. As you swipe five or more pieces, you’ll gain additional time and added points. For an added strategy, you can also track back your swipes to collect missed pieces as long as your finger doesn’t touch a non-matching candy piece along the way. Read More…

Samsung Italy has confirmed that a number of devices will be receiving the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update.  And though we figured these would make the list, it’s nice to have it writing.

Devices:

  • Galaxy S II
  • Galaxy Note
  • Galaxy Tab 10.1
  • Galaxy Tab 8.9
  • Galaxy Tab 7.7
  • Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus

We’re digging deep on whether or not the original Galaxy S device will be receiving the update as its specs are sort of yesterday’s specs.  However, if they do, you’ll be the first to know.

Q3 Smartphone sales Go to Samsung, Not Apple

Posted: 28 Oct 2011 10:58 PM PDT

Samsung claimed the top share of the global smartphone market in the third quarter with 23.8 percent, compared to Apple’s 14.6 percent. (Samsung fans rejoice.) Nokia took third with 14.4 percent of the market. Apple had the lead in the second quarter with 18.5 percent and Samsung was in second with 17.5 percent and of course Nokia was third with 15.2 percent.

Can anyone else see the same pattern I do? Samsung gained 6.3 percent from the second quarter to the third, while Apple and Nokia both lost ground. Best guesses are most buyers waited for the iPhone 4S release in the forth quarter.

Those  are still some impressive numbers from Samsung. This time last year, Samsung was in third with only 9.3 percent of the market. That is a 14.5 percent increase in one year. Apple lost 2.8 percent, while Nokia lost the most with 18.3 percent of the global market share. Samsung’s rise can be attributed to the 30 million Galaxy S, And Galaxy S II phones sold.

Are you happy for Samsung? Let us know what you think in the comments below.
