Alcatel One Touch hasn’t made much noise in the Android world recently, but that could all change. The above picture is the Alcatel 995 which will have a 4.3-inch display, 1.4GHz processor, 5MP rear camera, and 1.3MP front camera. I know the DROID RAZR is “under the radar” with the Galaxy Nexus launching soon, but seriously folks, this is one sexy beast at 7.1mm thick. We already did a hands on at the announcement, but here’s another video showing the boot animation, speedtests, and some of the Motorola UI (don’t call it Blur). You can already pre-order it, but everyone will have the chance to get their hands on one next Thursday, November 10 for $299.99 with a 2-year contract or the incredibly high full retail price of $649.99.

Republic Wireless To Give You Unlimited Talk, Text And Data Starting November 8th

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 10:29 AM PDT

We love our Android phones, but loathe the expensive monthly plans. Most of us pay what can be an arm and a leg monthly to use our devices. Here’s something that is sure to be an eye-opener for all: paying $20 per month for unlimited talk, text, and data courtesy of Republic Wireless. The carrier is fed up with the excessive prices for Android users and argues we’re “overdue for a serious evolution”.

Republic Wireless works in a unique way. Using specific Android-powered phones equipped with a technology similar to T-Mobile’s UMA (Unlicensed Mobile Access), RW allows you to make phone calls over WiFi networks as VoIP (Voice Over IP). In addition, you will have the ability to text over WiFi as well. As you leave the WiFi signal, RW users will then use a cell tower from Sprint for talk, text, and data. No word yet on the data speeds, but expect to see 3G technology as RW will be providing uncapped data for its users.

There are no details of which phones will be compatible with RW. However, we suspect we will see special variations of lower-end phone models from manufacturers. One major clue is the company’s preview page presenting clear images of what looks to be an LG Optimus One entry-level phone being taken apart. Be sure to share with us if you want to take it to The Man and go for the $20 monthly unlimited buffet when it becomes available next week.

A Quick Peek at Toon Ball – Free Game in The Android Market

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 10:15 AM PDT

We here at TalkAndoid are often approached by developers with hopes that we will review their latest apps. I recently looked at the growing list and thought I would randomly check one out. A game called Toon Ball caught my eye with its quirky art and goofy looking camel.

After downloading the game I noticed that the camel really has nothing to do with game play and is just used as background art (and, in my case, successful advertising!). The mission of the game is to get the ball to roll past obstacles and traps by altering the path it takes. Relying on gravity, the ball rolls from the starting point once you initiate movement by breaking a wooden block or other object that is keeping the ball at rest. As soon as it’s off and rolling you have to act quick in order to complete your next move to keep the momentum going. Once the ball is static you have to start the level over. Read More…

Samsung Galaxy Player 5.0 Unboxing and Initial Review

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 10:12 AM PDT

It’s been a little over a month since Samsung officially announced the Galaxy Players for the United States. The Galaxy Players have been available overseas for some time, but as of about 2 weeks ago you can purchase either model in the states. The Galaxy Player 5.0 features a 5-inch (800 x 480) Super Clear LCD display and the Galaxy Player 4.0 features a 4-inch (800 x 480) Super Clear LCD display. These are WiFi only devices similar to the iPod Touch, but you still have the full Android Market and all the capabilities of a typical Android phone minus mobile data connectivity.

Both come with a 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, 3.2MP rear camera, VGA front camera, 8GB built in memory (expandable to another 32GB via microSD), and Gingerbread 2.3.5. You will find a bigger battery in the 5.0, which is at 2,500mAh, as opposed to 1,200mAh for the 4.0. You can purchase the 5.0 for $269 or the 4.0 for $229 through all major retailers. So far it looks like a really nice device for those that just want something simple to use in the house for media and playing games. I will give a full review soon, but for now, check out the initial hands on after the break.

Verizon Begins to Roll-Out Gingerbread Update for OG 7-inch Galaxy Tab

Posted: 02 Nov 2011 08:20 AM PDT

Today, Verizon begins officially rolling out the Gingerbread update to OG 7-inch Galaxy Tab’s. It was only a last week that we got the update announcement and here we are a few short days later and Big Red delivers.

If you own a 7- inch GTab and have yet to receive the OTA update you can try and push the Gingerbread treat to your device yourself. To do so, you just need to press Menu –> Settings –> About Tablet –> System Updates. From there you will see if the i800.E104 version is available to you yet. If it’s not, try again later because roll outs can take a while to reach all devices so if your GTab isn’t among the first group than you should see it fairly soon.

For a recap, jump past the break for a full changelog. If you get the update be sure to let us know how you’re liking it! Read More…
