AT&T Announces Prices For Upcoming Samsung, Pantech Devices

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 05:50 PM PST

A few days ago we told you about three new phones to be released on AT&T November 20th, the Pantech Pocket, The Samsung Doubletime and Captivate Glide. All have entry level specs and because of that, we assumed that they would carry equally reflected price tags. Well, today AT&T confirmed our suspicions and announced how much each phone would sell for.

The Samsung Captivate Glide is the highest priced device only because it comes packed with a dual-core chip, dual cameras and a Super AMOLED display. You will be able to pick up one of these QWERTY sliders for around $150 with a new service agreement.

Sammy’s other debuting device, the Doubletime, also comes with a QWERTY keyboard but in clamshell form. A dual screen device, it disappoints right out of the gate due to its 600MHz processor and will hold a $50 price tag because of that reason. This won’t be the choice for many power users but instead will make a great fit with the teens.

Finally, the Pantech Pocket also earns a $50 price and is interesting because of its design. Smaller than most smartphones today, the Pocket has an 800 x 600 display with a 4:3 aspect ratio. Not the greatest phone to be watching a lot of videos on, it does however look to be easily pocketable. Think that’s why they named it the Pocket? :-)

Verizon Galaxy Nexus Info Poster Emerges

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 05:16 PM PST

Today, our friends over at Phandroid got their hands on a new Poster-like info sheet for the Verizon Galaxy Nexus. Thoughts are that maybe this could be some form of marketing for in-store use or possibly even a specs reminder for Verizon employees. Nothing new is to be gained from this leak other than maybe seeing a launch next week isn’t completely out of the question.

Firefox Nightlies Incorporate Flash Despite Adobe Discontinuing It

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 04:17 PM PST

Adobe discontinuing Flash support for mobile browsers came as a shock for most when the announcement was made. What is even more surprising is that even with this announcement Firefox has implemented the plug-in into its nightly builds. While those who have installed the mobile version of the popular web browser have been calling it for a while now, even developers are puzzled. Dknite was quoted to say in his blog:

“Since Firefox's for Android inception back in March 2010, the top request and comment is ‘We want Flash, We Want Flash!’  Why people want that buggy plugin still floors me today, but Mozilla's heard you loud and clear.”

So while I haven’t tested this personally, those of you interested in taking it for a test run can download the file below and let us know what you think of it in the comments section. Make sure that when you go to manually install it, that you have the Unknown Sources option checked under the application area of your settings.  With Flash being discontinued it will be interesting to see how long flash support will remain in any of the browsers. Who knows, maybe Sibblingz Spaceport 3.0 will take the place of Flash down the road.

Samsung Releases a Bunch of New Galaxy Nexus Instructional Videos

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 02:53 PM PST

Today is sure a big day for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus! First off, it was released in the UK and oddly enough the first one that was sold got returned. Samsung then updated its US Galaxy Nexus product page, adding an official US spec sheet, 3D view, and outed its official US commercial. The specs sheet then confirmed that here in the US we will be treated to a 100mAh larger battery compared to its overseas counterpart. Specs also reveal that the stateside device is now a half a millimeter thicker than the one originally debuted. And as if that wasn’t enough, to top it all off, the Galaxy Nexus was then put through a brutal scratch test to determine the resilience of its non Gorilla Glass display. Whew! All that and still no US release date!

Anyway, one of the coolest events from today was the additions to the Galaxy Nexus website. You can now watch a bunch of walkthrough videos explaining many of the device’s awesome features. We round up the whole lot and thought we would share them with you here on TalkAndroid. There are quite a few so you will need to jump past the break to check them all out. After you’re done, be sure to let us know in the comments what feature/s you are most looking forward to. I am sure there is at least one that will catch your eye!

[Video] Galaxy Nexus Submitted to Vicious Scratch Test

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 12:07 PM PST

Many of you have expressed concern with the fact that Samsung has decided to equip the Galaxy Nexus with an alternative fortified glass as opposed to Corning’s Gorilla Glass. Just because the the popular glass maker wasn’t chosen to outfit the GN’s display doesn’t mean that Sammy cut any corners.

A video recently surfaced on the interweb showing somebody putting the screen to the test by trying to scratch the crap out of it with a key. Although I definitely cringed a bit and felt a shiver down my spine, I was pleased to see the outcome. Here, just check it out for yourself and tell us what you think. Will you be issuing such a test once you get your mitts on one?

Android Market Makes It to the Kindle Fire [Courtesy of XDA]

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 12:06 PM PST

As you know from yesterday the developers over at XDA wasted no time in bringing more functionality to the newly released Kindle Fire. While Amazon did say that the Fire would be able to side load apps, a question of how it was to be done, lingered. Owners of the e-reader/tablet are now able to side load applications and thanks to the SuperOneClick app, now being able to root the device. Well XDA hasn’t stopped at just that. Today they bring users the ability to install the Android Market, bringing this and other Google applications with it. Just a heads up, those of you who have a Fire and want this added functionality will need to have the device rooted and be comfortable with the use of file explorers. If you are an owner of the Kindle Fire and want full access to both the Android Market and Google Apps follow the link below to get started courtesy of Jolleyboy over at XDA.   Read More…

Galaxy Nexus Website Adds Commercial and Walkthrough Videos

Posted: 17 Nov 2011 11:25 AM PST

Now that the Galaxy nexus is available in some parts of the world, Samsung has updated their product page revealing the US spec sheet and new walkthrough videos. As if to torture us US folks that have already great anticipation, Sammy’s new Galaxy Nexus website will surely get you even more excited for its release. The site is beautifully done and features even more videos yet unseen, even the GN’s official commercial.

As far as the specs go, the only piece of info we had yet to confirm until today is the stateside battery size. It is true that the device will pack a 100mAh larger battery than its international counterpart, bringing it up to 1850mAh. Unfortunately for the US that comes at a small price, but only the hipsters with skinny jeans need to fret. The Verizon GN will be just over a half a millimeter thicker than the device as it was originally announced.

One thing to mention is the fact that reports are showing that Verizon has some how muddled the vanilla Android theory by slipping in its Verizon Backup Assistant and My Verizon Mobile. What gives Big Red? You can’t leave well enough alone? On top of adding the Verizon logo to the back of the device, it seems they are really trying to ruin what should be a additive free experience.

With all that being said, all we really don’t know about the new Galaxy Nexus is when the hell we can actually get our hands on the thing. This has got to be one of the most, if not the most, anticipated device launches in Android history. At this point I plan to camp out at my local Verizon store the night before its release :-D . Jump past the break to check out the commercial to appreciate how Samsung chose a more subtle approach to marketing (cough*Droid Razr* cough), and let us know what you think. It sure makes me wish I was chuckling with a buddy after using Android Beam! Read More…
