Sprint required to give AT&T more documents in T-Mobile purchase case

A special master that is overseeing the documents in the Justice Department's case against the purchase of T-Mobile by AT&T has ruled that Sprint must provide more documents to AT&T that shed light on the effect the Apple iPhone will have on Sprint in the wireless marketplace. Sprint felt that the AT&T subpoena for the documents should be rejected, but the court disagreed.

HTC Edge rumored to be the first smartphone with quad-core processor

PocketNow has gotten its hands on images of and information about a new smartphone from HTC that is purportedly going to be the first quad-core smartphone to hit the market. Called the Edge, the phone is said to be powered by a Tegra 3 processor from NVIDIA and have a 4.7-inch display.

Sprint echoes HTC's announcement of Android 4.0 ICS upgrades

Sprint has released a statement that jives with HTC's earlier announcement that some of its current smartphones would be upgraded to Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich in early part of next year. Sprint says that it will bring the upgrade to a "variety of devices," but it specifically mentions that the HTC EVO 3D and the new HTC Design 4G would be upgraded for certain. The carrier expects the upgrades to be delivered over-the-air to customers in the early part of 2012.

RIM points finger at ISPs for this morning's service outage

There were scattered reports of BlackBerry service outages this morning, with users stating that certain functions of their phones, such as internet browsing and select apps, would not connect to the internet or refresh. According to RIM, the service interruptions were caused by internet service providers - most likely Time Warner Cable here in the U.S. - being down, therefore causing delays for carriers. RIM's statement is as follows: "There was a global Internet issue this morning that impacted a number of Internet Service Providers (ISP) around the world. RIM's BlackBerry Infrastructure was not impacted however, some customers may have experienced delays with their ISP. RIM continues to monitor the situation." It appears that everything has returned to normal, though there is a chance that some users will still see some issues.

Spotify for Windows Phone to be available soon

Microsoft has announced that the Spotify app for Windows Phone will be available very soon. Spotify offers another streaming music option for the platform, which currently boasts Microsoft's Zune Pass and Slacker Radio services, among others. Spotify takes advantage of the multitasking features in Windows Phone 7.5 to offer background music streaming even when the app is closed. The Spotify app will be free, though streaming to a mobile device requires a $10 per month premium subscription. Microsoft did not specify when the app will be available in the Windows Phone Marketplace, only that it will arrive "soon."

Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet live hands-on and first look

Barnes & Noble just announced the new NOOK Tablet at a press event in NYC this morning, and we managed to get a brief hands-on with the Kindle Fire competitor. Though the NOOK Tablet looks very similar to the older NOOK Color, it is significantly upgraded on the inside, and that makes all the difference.

Along with the release of the new NOOK Tablet, Barnes & Noble announced a software update coming to the NOOK Color that adds over 100 new features. Called "Barnes & Noble's largest software update ever," the update includes support for Netflix streaming, support for both portrait and landscape reading in e-books, easier access to magazine content, and an improved shopping experience. The update will be available in December for free to all NOOK Color owners. Along with the update, Barnes & Noble is dropping the price of the NOOK Color to $199, effective today.

Barnes & Noble drops price of NOOK Color, Simple Touch e-readers

Barnes & Noble has announced that it is dropping the price of the NOOK Color and NOOK Simple Touch e-reader tablets. The NOOK Color will go from $249 to $199 to make room for the new NOOK Tablet, which is priced at $249. The NOOK Simple Touch will drop from $149 to $99, and Barnes & Noble is throwing in free in-store gift wrapping for the Simple Touch. The price drops are expected to take effect today.

Barnes & Noble claims 27 percent of e-reader market, NOOK Color number 2 selling tablet in U.S.

During a press conference in NYC today, Barnes & Noble revealed some stats about the e-reader and tablet market in the U.S. The bookseller's suite of NOOK e-readers claim 27 percent of the e-reader market, while the NOOK Color is considered the second-best selling tablet in the U.S., behind the market leader Apple iPad. Barnes & Noble's e-reader ecosystem now has access to 2.5 million book titles, over 100 magazines, thousands of kid's books, and full-color comics from Marvel.

Microsoft drops camera requirement for Windows Phone 7.5 smartphones

Microsoft has quietly relaxed the hardware specifications for Windows Phone 7.5 handsets to allow a few to be optional that were formerly mandated requirements. Most notable of the changes is the dropping of the requirement that a Windows Phone smartphone must have a camera.

The Android smartphone comes with a price tag of $299.99 with a qualifying two year service agreement. Verizon Wireless offers double the data for 4G smartphone owners

Verizon Wireless has announced a limited-time promotion that provides double the amount of data usage for the same price to new and existing 4G LTE smartphone owners. Starting tomorrow, 4G customers can opt for a 4GB data plan that costs the same $30 per month as the normal 2GB plan.

HTC plans to release new tablet next year, promises to be different from others

In an interview with Reuters, HTC CEO Peter Chou revealed that his company intends to release a new tablet device next year. That isn't much of a surprise, as HTC already has two tablets on the market - the 7-inch HTC Flyer/EVO View 4G and the 10-inch HTC Jetstream - but Chou insists that HTC's next attempt at cracking the iPad's lock on consumers will make the company stand out from the sea of tablet competitors currently on the market.
