Happy Birthday Android

Posted: 05 Nov 2011 04:21 PM PDT

It was 4 years ago today that Android was first introduced, and it has been one amazing ride from Android 1.1, Cupcake and all the way to the soon to be released Ice Cream Sandwich. For me personally, my first experience with Android was November 6, 2009, which was the day the original DROID was released. I am so thankful to be part of TalkAndroid, sharing my passion with each and everyone of you for the greatest mobile OS in the world. I am looking forward to many more wonderful years.

I will make one small prediction for next year’s 5th birthday, which I think will be the day the next Nexus device will be released. Until then, HAPPY BIRTHDAY Android and enjoy this video from 4 years ago today.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Ray unboxing and initial hands on review [Video]

Posted: 05 Nov 2011 12:59 PM PDT

Last month Sony Ericsson finally brought the Xperia Ray to the US as an unlocked device compatible with AT&T. The price started around $424, but now it can be bought as low as $328 at Amazon. The specs are far from jaw dropping, but if you consider the price is a full retail with no contracts, it’s not a bad buy.

It features a 3.3-inch (854 x 480) screen, 1GHz processor, 512MB RAM, and Android 2.3.4 Gingerbread. The highlight is the 8.1MP camera that supposedly performs well in low light situations. It also sports a VGA front facing camera for your video chatting needs.

Those of you that don’t like contracts, but like a sleek compact phone are going to love the Xperia Ray. We will do a more in depth review soon, but for now checkout the initial hands review on below.

LG’s Fashionable Prada K2 Clears FCC, NFC on Board

Posted: 05 Nov 2011 12:51 PM PDT

Most likely to never  see a U.S. launch, the LG Prada K2, was recently filled with the FCC and received the official go-ahead. This fancy designer-branded LG phone sports a 4.3-inch NOVA display, dual-core processor, 8MP rear facing camera, 1.3MP front facing camera and Android 2.3. The device is a mere 8.8mm thin and has NFC capabilities along with dual-band WiFi, Bluetooth, GSM/EDGE 850 and 1900, and WCDMA 1900 bands.

It’s too bad you can’t get these phones here in the U.S.. It would most definitely add some bling to your mobile lifestyle!

Fresh after the official HTC Rezound Announcement in New York, HTC released a promo video and feature documents for their final 2011 flagship phone. DROID RAZR Gets its Early Root On

Posted: 05 Nov 2011 11:53 AM PDT

By now you are definitely familiar with the Motorola DROID RAZR, one of the hot 4G LTE devices headed for Verizon. The RAZR will have some fierce competition with the likes of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus and the HTC Rezound. One positive aspect of the RAZR, like that of the Galaxy Nexus, it has recently been rooted, ready for your tinkering as soon as you get it home on November 11th.

The popular 1-click root tool that has been used on various Moto devices also works on the RAZR. As you can see in the photo below, the device has a # symbol after the owner typed in “su” in terminal emulator. This is great news, yes? But don’t forget, Motorola has unfortunately locked the bootloader for Verizon-bound devices.

How many of you have plans for this device to be your next?

Yesterday, U.S. Cellular announced the impending launch of its 4G LTE network, saying that they have plans to cover about 25 percent of its footprint in the initial rollout. Throughout the announcement there is no mention of which markets would be a part of the first LTE push, but the carrier just issued a press release detailing a few cities that will be included within the initial launch.

  • Iowa: Cedar Rapids, Davenport, and Des Moines
  • Maine: Portland and Bangor
  • North Carolina: Greenville
  • Wisconsin: Madison, Milwaukee, and Racine

U.S. Cellular also confirmed that markets in Texas and Oklahoma will be included as well, but didn’t specify which cities. With new LTE coverage comes new LTE handsets, and U.S. Cellular is currently testing devices that should be available in the first quarter of 2012. No word on which devices are being considered, but you can assume most of them will be Android based.

Join us after the break for the full press release. Read More…

Transformer Prime Gets Benchmarked On AnTuTu

Posted: 05 Nov 2011 02:11 AM PDT

We’re seeing more and more news on the Transformer Prime lately and it should only be a matter of time until that bad boy lands in the hands of the masses.  Here’s some more news to assist with all of the drooling and to keep the crave going a bit.  In a recent screen shot we can see a pair of Asus Eee Pad TF201 devices running the AnTuTu benchmark application touting some pretty high scores.  The graph displays a standard 1.4 GHz tab’s results but if you’ll note the top result, it’s a Transformer Prime clocked at 1.6 GHz reporting a max score of 12872.  Damn!  The device displaying the 7596 results is a Transformer TF101.  And though benchmarks are the end all and be all of the device’s performance, they can be a good starting point.  This should suffice as a slight taste of what the new Kal-El chipset can do.  Stay tuned as we continue to dig up some more on the device until its release.  Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below.
