Google Officially Launches Google Music Service For Android, Updates Market & App, Also Adds “Artist Hub” (Video)

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 04:28 PM PST

The anticipation is over and as most of you are well aware, Google officially announced the launch of its new Google Music Service.  The event kicked off with a bang as they displayed a commercial touting the new service.  I’ve always said that Google is known for reinventing the wheel, and when they do, they do it well.  Google Music is no different and we’re pleased to see what the search giant has done with it. Adding incredible digital content, seamless integration with the Android Market and Google Music app, searching and discovering new music is not only going to be a cinch, but fun as hell. Lets get in to the meat and potatoes of the service shall we? Google is really focusing on making Google Music not only an easy way to get new tracks from artists you love but to also deeply integrate it’s own social network, Google Plus.

The team used an HTC Amaze for the demo and touted the service as instant, flexible, convenient and offers Instant Mix, a neat way to build play-lists with one click. Just point your browser to music.google.com and you’re all set to start listening to your uploaded music as well as purchase new content on the fly.  One of the features they showed off was the ability to “pin music” when you don’t have an adequate internet connection.  This allows you to then resume obtaining that content when you reconnect to the web later.  Google has also added features like play count and ratings in this latest release.  The company also showed off its new Google Music integration into the Android Market both on the web and on your Android device.  The new Music service on the market will offer millions of songs from all different sorts of genres, sub genres and top charts giving you generous 90 second previews.  They’ve also added better music discovery to the home page just in case you’re not sure of what you’re looking for.  The service will offer “personal recommendations” based on your music collection, which is a neat feature.  But that’s not all!  Google has also integrated the seamless ability to share your music with your friends on Google Plus.  When you download a song you like, you can instantly share it with Google Plus, offering your friends full previews while never interrupting their streams.  In addition, they can then head on over to check the artist out for themselves and get full previews of the artists’ albums.   Read More…

Rom Review: The EVO Classic; The Fastest Sense ROM Out There?

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 03:47 PM PST

When well known xda member tommytomatoe decided to put together a ROM I (and a lot of other EVO users) were curious. Tommy is often looked at as one of the most innovative and creative developers out there. From his masterful themes, to his guides, to his work on changing the HTC Sense Rosie without root (yeah, he was the genius who came up with all of this); he’s been known to think outside of the box and be damn good at putting those thoughts together. Staying true to what we expect, he decided rather than follow everyone and bring out another bleeding edge Sense 3.x ROM, he’d try something completely new. In fact, he’s stepping back. The EVO Classic ROM is based off of Sense 1.0. Yeah, Sense 1.0. The Evo originally shipped with a version higher than that. So you might be wondering how I might possibly recommend a ROM featuring software that’s seemingly over a year old? Just wait until you learn about this ROM. Amazing things happen when you make things from scratch.

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 01:52 PM PST

Acer just keeps it coming. After just seeing certain Acer tablets would feature Tegra 3 chips, we now know that Acer plans on bringing even more quad-core speed demons in the not to distant future. Another user agent profile has slipped out of the cracks clearly showing specific details of what will be the Iconia A700 and A701 tablets. Here you will see that not only are there Tegra 3 quad-core chips, but there’s also a rather monstrous 1920×1200 display. Tegra 3 chip, check. 1900×1200 display, check. Easter Egg Finally Uncovered In Ice Cream Sandwich, Flying Nyan-Andys (Video)

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 12:48 PM PST

Well, we all know how silly Google can get, and that’s just how it goes when you’re a multi-billion dollar company.  You can do whatever the heck you want to.  And with that, Google tends to cleverly hide little tidbits of joy within their OS on flagship devices, and your job is to dig deep and find them.  Well, the Easter Egg hunt is over in Ice Cream Sandwich as it’s finally been uncovered.  We’re not sure if this is just for the UK version of the Galaxy Nexus or not but it looks like the tidbit has been uncovered nonetheless.  If you jump into your system settings and tap on the Android version multiple times in a row, you’ll receive a greeting from a little Andy.  If you press on him and hold, he grows larger and larger until he transitions in to a slew of flying Nyan-Andys across your screen.  In addition, to further add to the silliness, in the ADT plug-in for LogCAt, someone made a bold request to change the log into a cat, and Google being Google was happy to oblige.  The logo has now been changed to the little Nyan-Andy for developers everywhere.  What you do you think of this go-around’s Easter Egg hunt?  Worth the hunt?  Or hardly worth the hunt?  Hit the break to check out the video demo. Sharp to Release 7 Inch Galapagos Tablet

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 12:23 PM PST

Earlier today Sharp debuted another  7-inch tablet similar to the one debuted a few months back. While killing off both the 10.8 and 5.5 inch models, Sharp showed continued support for its 7 inch line. Masami Obatake, a general manager for one of Sharp's consumer product divisions informed reporters that they will continue bringing out new products. With that said, the Galapagos EB-A71GJ-B sports some decent features.

The tablet has a 7-inch screen with a 1024×600 resolution. Running Honeycomb 3.2, it will feature a Tergra-2 dual-core processor.  There is a chance that it may see Ice Cream Sandwich but there is no official word on it. It will have 8GB of internal storage with a micro SD slot for additional storage. Both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth will be intergrated and it will feature WiMax support. This will allow the Galapagos to act much like a Wi-Fi router with the ability to tether up to seven other devices. The device will also have a rear 5MP and a 2MP frontside camera. There will also be an HDMI out port for TV viewing.

While there is no say as to when this tablet will be seen in the United States it appears that this tablet will go on sale in Japan on December 17th.  As there are no details on pricing, it will be hard to determine if it will even make a debut here in the US. Given that it was rumored that Sharp would debut a 7-inch tablet in August, a lot of questions still need to be answered.  A source says that this will be released on September 12th however, as it is Mid-November this may be a typo as it is also hard to believe that a tablet with these specs will arrive in September of 2012.

Water Physics Based Puzzler Sprinkle Now Available On Android 2.3 And Higher

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 11:43 AM PST

You may have missed trying this game out from developer Mediocre as it used to only run on TEGRA 2 devices. With some of the most realistic water physics seen on an Android, Sprinkle is a puzzle game that looks absolutely fantastic. Great news today though as it now supports most devices running Android 2.3 and up. What’s even better is Mediocre is offering a demo of the game for free on the market, which if you like it, you can grab the full version for $1.99. Hit up the break for some game features, screenshots, an a video showing the game off. Of course links to download the demo to follow as well. Let us know what you think.

Amazon Kindle Fire unboxing and initial hands on review [Video]

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 10:37 AM PST

The Amazon Kindle Fire just might be the hottest gift this holiday season. It comes with a 7-inch (1024 x 600) IPS display, 1GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor, 512MB RAM, 8GB for storage (about 6GB usable), microUSB, 3.5mm stereo audio jack, and WiFi. You won’t find a camera, but for $199 you can’t beat it. We’re not sure what version of Android they used to develop their user interface, but it’s completely stripped. Amazon also features their own browser called Amazon Silk, which promises faster load times. For a small device, I was surprised at how heavy it is. It comes in at 413 grams, while the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus comes in at 345 grams. My first impression is that it does seem like a nice tablet and feels solid, but I’m disappointed with the lack of RAM and a microSD slot for expanded storage. I will do a more in depth review, but for now, check out my initial hands on.

[Video] Google’s Matias Duarte Shows Off Android 4.0 Real-Time Video Effects

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 10:02 AM PST

With all the great features that we are looking forward to in the impending release of  Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich, some are more practical than others. This week, The Verge, had an opportunity to sit down with Matias Duarte to spend a few minutes discussing one of the more ‘add-it-cause-it’s-fun features’ rather than focus on more serious stuff.

The video below outlines a new addition to the ICS’ native camera app that allows you to apply real-time video effects. By applying a tweak-filter, if you will, you can create goofy caricature-like effects and distort the persons face or head as you see fit. While focusing solely on the subjects head, the camera can apply these effects without distorting anything else contained within the video. Feel like making your buddy look a bit pudgier than normal? Easy. Feel like making your girlfriend look a tad skinnier than in reality? Just a click away.

These kooky features will now be found within the native ICS video camera and while not very practical, they are bound to provide a bit of fun in between those times you are enjoying the more serious improvements within Android’s latest, and most definitely greatest, OS to date. Check out the video after the break and let us know what you think.

HTC Vivid Catching Some Heat Having The Same Name As An Adult Film Company

Posted: 16 Nov 2011 10:01 AM PST

How about some silly news for the day? The Adult Film company Vivid Entertainment seems to think people are going to confuse the HTC Vivid with their company brand. Color me ignorant if you will, but I can’t fathom anyone thinking an HTC smartphone has anything to do with a porn company. Nonsense or not, Vivid Entertainment has demanded HTC change the name of their device. HTC has responded:

“We are reviewing the complaint and don’t expect to have any further comment until it is resolved.”

While Vivid Entertainment has launched a Google TV channel, there is a SMALL possibility someone somewhere might link the two, but I think this nonsense. Stay tuned to see how this shakes down and share your thought in the comments.
