Google awarded patent for pattern unlock on smartphones, tablets

Just as Apple owns the patent to its "slide-to-unlock" feature in iOS, Google can now lay claim to a screen unlock patent of its own. The United States Patent & Trademark Office recently approved Google's application for a patent on the pattern unlock feature that is found on oh so many Android smartphones. In addition to the unlock utilization, Google was also awarded a patent on custom gestures that can be used for various actions, such as silencing a device. The patent states that the gesture can be performed anywhere on the screen, and is not limited to a specific area or region.

Samsung Focus 1.4 phones finally get Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update

Happen to own a Samsung Focus on AT&T but were saddled with version 1.4 firmware that left you out of the Windows Phone 7.5 Mango update that everyone else got? Fret not, as Microsoft has announced that it is finally pushing the upgrade to the Focus with firmware version 1.4. As expected, the upgrade adds a number of new features, including multitasking, more social network integration, and third-party Live Tile support. Users should get a notification on their phones when the update is ready to be downloaded and installed.

Microsoft gifting $25 worth of apps to Windows Phone buyers

Microsoft has announced a new promotion that gives new Windows Phone 7.5 smartphone buyers a gift card that can be used to purchase $25 worth of apps. The company says the promo makes it easy to start a new app collection, or replace apps that have already been paid for if someone is switching platforms to Windows Phone. The offer is good in the U.S. and Puerto Rico, and Microsoft did not say when it would end. Users can apply for the gift card at Microsoft's redemption site.

Apple iPad, iPod touch, iPhone top kids' holiday wishlists this year

Nielsen's latest report on consumers took a look at what kids were asking for as holiday gifts this year, and once again Apple's iPad was king of the hill. In fact, Apple took the top three slots of most desired products, with the iPod touch and iPhone claiming numbers 2 and 3.

Motorola Mobility accused of stealing source code in new lawsuit

A company by the name of Lemko Corporation has filed a lawsuit against Motorola Mobility claiming that the phone-maker has stolen trade secrets and is benefiting financially from the use of Lemko's source code. The code that Lemko claims was stolen relates to server-based network positioning technology, and it says it was obtained through an employee of Lemko paid by Motorola.

Motorola shareholders approve Google purchase

Motorola Mobility has announced that its shareholders have voted in approval of Google's proposed $12.5 billion purchase of the company that was announced back in August. Motorola said that more than 99 percent of the voting shareholders were in approval of the purchase. Google's proposed $12.5 billion purchase equates to about $40 per share in cash. The companies expect the purchase to be completed during the end of 2011 or in early 2012.

HTC updates HD7, Mozart, Radar with internet sharing feature

HTC is reportedly issuing updates to the HD7, Mozart, and Radar Windows Phone 7.5 smartphones that enables the in-built internet sharing feature that Windows Phone supports. The updates are not coming to all countries and regions, but users in India, the Netherlands, Poland, and Switzerland have all reported receiving the update and gaining the ability to use internet sharing. Microsoft built the feature into Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, but left it open for carrier and manufacturers to decide to enable or disable it if they choose. The feature turns the smartphone into a Wi-Fi hotspot that allows up to 5 devices to connect simultaneously.
