Amazon Kindle Fire hacked to run CyanogenMod 7

Though Amazon may have buried Android under a deep layer of custom interfaces on the Kindle Fire, underneath it all, it is still Android at its base, which means that enterprising hackers are going to tinker with it. That tinkering is already bearing fruit, as everyone's favorite custom Android ROM, CyanogenMod 7, has been shown booting on the Kindle Fire.

FCC will approve AT&T's withdrawal of proposal to purchase T-Mobile

According to the Wall Street Journal, the Federal Communications Commission will approve AT&T's withdrawal of its proposal to purchase T-Mobile, despite earlier concerns that it would not. AT&T had filed to withdraw it proposal last week after the FCC said that it would hold an administrative hearing on the matter.

CTIA, ESRB create mobile app rating system; Google, Apple opt-out

The CTIA and the ESRB have announced a new rating system for mobile applications that is designed to make it easy for parents to determine whether or not a particular mobile app or game is suitable for their children. The ESRB has been attaching similar age-based rating systems to console and PC games for years, so parents should already be familiar with the system.

The ZTE Warp is a new Android smartphone for Boost Mobile's prepaid service, and it is the first ZTE smartphone for the carrier. It features a 4.3-inch, WVGA display, 1GHz processor, and a 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and flash. The Warp runs Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread with Boost's Mobile ID customization system. The Warp can be purchased from Boost Mobile locations or online for $199.99 without a contract.

Nielsen says Android still top smartphone OS, Apple still top manufacturer in U.S.

Nielsen has just released its latest report on the smartphone market in the U.S., and as has been the trend for some time now, Android is still the top smartphone OS, while Apple is still the top smartphone manufacturer. Though other companies, Samsung in particular, have made inroads into Apple's market share in other parts of the world, the Cupertino company still has a strong lead in the U.S. market.

Apple iPhone glows red, spews smoke on Australian flight

Somebody on an Australian flight was having a bad day last week, as their iPhone apparently spontaneously combusted shortly after the plane had landed. The phone got so hot that it started glowing red like lava and spewing black smoke into the cabin of the plane.

The HTC Sensation XL is the latest in a trio of handsets aimed at the high end of the market, with a huge 4.7-inch WVGA resolution display, 1.5GHz single core processor, and 8 megapixel camera with F2.2 lens and Back Side Illuminated sensor. The handset is running Android 2.3 Gingerbread and has HTC's own Sense 3.0 UI to add some extra sparkle.

Google extends I/O developer conference, moves it to June

In light of high demand for its I/O developer conference (and for the freebies that are always given away at it), Google has decided to extend the 2012 conference from 2 days to 3. In the process, it has also moved the conference to from April 24 and 25 to June 27 through 29, 2012, though it will still be held in the Moscone Center in San Francisco. The new date puts it after when Apple is expected to host the 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC).

Samsung to exceed 2011 smartphone sales projections

Samsung has said that it expects to exceed its own 2011 smartphone sales goal thanks to strong sales of its popular Galaxy S II series of Android powered devices. Reuters quotes a Samsung executive as stating "We are pinning high hopes...on achieving sales higher than our previous plan." The comment was made at an event in Seoul for the launch of the LTE versions of Samsung's Galaxy Note smartphone and Galaxy Tab 8.9 tablet.

RIM reportedly offering BlackBerry PlayBook to employees for $99

According to The Verge, RIM is offering a special deal to its own employees where they can snag a BlackBerry PlayBook for as little as $99. The smartphone maker has already discounted the PlayBook to $199 for the public, which caused quite a bit of demand, with retailers such as Best Buy even selling completely out of it. The deal for employees allows them to purchase the 16GB model for $99, the 32GB for $149, or the 64GB version for $199.

According to a report by the New York Times, AT&T may divest a large portion of T-Mobile's assets to regional carrier Leap Wireless, owner of the Cricket brand, as a last ditch effort to gain federal approval for its purchase of T-Mobile. The assets would involve spectrum and subscribers, but it is not clear how much would end up being divested.

Apple serves iOS 5.1 beta to developers

Yesterday afternoon Apple started distributing iOS 5.1 beta 1 for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch to registered developers. The new version of the OS offers a number of new developer tools for coders and addresses some bugs in music playback and other functions. Apple did not say whether or not iOS 5.1 finally fixes the battery life issues that some users have faced since upgrading to iOS 5 and were not completely resolved in iOS 5.0.1. The beta is available to registered developers now and will likely be made available as an update for all users in the near future, though Apple has not announced a timeframe for a public release just yet.

iTether, USB tethering app for iPhone pops up in App Store

A new app showed up in the iTunes App Store for the iPhone last night that allows users to tether their iPhone's data connection to their PC or Mac without purchasing an appropriate tethering plan from their carrier. The app requires the use of a USB cable, and offers unlimited tethering without a recurring monthly fee.

Best Buy clears up BlackBerry PlayBook confusion, says it simply sold out

Earlier this week, there was quite a bit of confusion surrounding Best Buy's intentions with the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet. The retailer had slashed the price of the tablet by $300 in order to move inventory. Apparently, so many orders were placed that Best Buy ran out of available stock and canceled some orders without explanation, which led to a fair amount of speculation over the retailer's plans. This led some to believe that Best Buy had stopped carrying the PlayBook.
