HTC outs source code for Rezound, Explorer, Desire S, Amaze 4G

HTC has released the source code, the underlying code that makes devices tick, for the Rezound, Explorer, Desire S, and Amaze 4G smartphones. While this may not mean much for the average user, those that like to tinker and develop custom software for devices will be able to get a deeper look at the Android code that powers these smartphones. The source code can be downloaded from htcdev.com now.

Apple defends against S3 Graphics patent suit to HTC's dismay

The U.S. International Trade Commission has determined that Apple has not violated any of the patents that S3 Graphics claims to own, and has dismissed the entire complaint. Earlier this year, a preliminary decision by the ITC said that Apple had in fact violated S3's patents, but a further review by the ITC determined that "no violation [...] has been shown [...] and that the investigation is terminated." This could be a blow to HTC in its patent cases against Apple, as the Korean company is in the process of purchasing S3 Graphics and its patent portfolio.

AT&T hack attempt thwarted

Adding to AT&T's earlier headache, a wireless data outage in the Northeastern part of the U.S., the company is emailing some of its customers to inform them of an "organized and systemic" hack attempt that was made on customer accounts. The company further states "we do not believe that the perpetrators of this attack obtained access to your online account or any of the information contained in that account." AT&T spokesperson Mark Siegel said that less than one percent of the company's customers were affected and that no accounts were breached. He also stated that AT&T would continue to investigate to determine the source of the attack.

HP blew $3.3 billion killing Palm and webOS

HP released its Q4 2011 financial results this afternoon, and while the company did better than Wall Street expected it to, it still managed to lose billions of dollars on the webOS platform. Last year, HP bought Palm for $1.2 billion, and today the company admitted how much more money it sunk into webOS this year, only to leave it high and dry halfway through.

The HTC Sensation XE is a slightly upgraded Sensation with a faster processor and bigger battery. It also features Beats Audio by Dr. Dre, which comes in the form of red accents on the handset and a pair of Beats Audio headphones in the box. The dual core processor now hums along at 1.5GHz and the new battery is rated at 1730mAh. The Sensation XE packs the same 4.3-inch qHD display, 8 megapixel camera capable of shooting 1080p video, and HTC Sense 3.0 UI as its predecessor.

Verizon announces more towns for December 15 LTE roll-out

Verizon Wireless is offering a nice holiday present to a bunch of people, as it has announced more towns and cities that will be getting 4G LTE service on December 15. In addition to the previously announced markets in Ohio, Verizon will light up LTE in Dover, Del.; Skidaway, Whitemarsh, Wilmington and Tybee Islands, Garden City, Rincon, Springfield, Guyton, Pembroke, Richmond Hill, Midway, Hinesville, and Savannah, Ga.; Greater Manchester and Nashua, N.H.; Fitchburg, Leominster, Lunenburg, and Townsend, Mass.; and Clintondale, Fishkill, Hyde Park, Kingston, New Paltz, Plattekill, Poughkeepsie, Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Saugerties, and Wappingers Falls, New York. The carrier has already reached its goal of 185 million covered with LTE by the end of 2011, so these new markets are just gravy for the carrier.

Google updates Search app for iPad, proves it can make decent iOS apps

Google has released a new version of its all-in-one search app for the iPad that maximizes the tablet's larger screen. The new app features quick shortcuts and a tabbed interface not unlike that seen in the Chrome browser on the desktop, and it has improved search results with dual-pane views.

Verizon updates Messages app for Android with tablet/smartphone sync

Verizon Wireless has released an update to its SMS/MMS Messages app for Android smartphones that allows users to send and receive their messages on a tablet device in addition to their smartphone. Version 2.0 of Messages will let users pair up to four smartphones with one tablet, and doesn't require any additional subscription fees to use.

AT&T says early-morning data outage in Northeast resolved

Early this morning, AT&T users in New York and other areas in the Northeast reported data service issues with their iPhone, Android, and BlackBerry smartphones. Users were unable to access email or browse the web when connected to AT&T's cellular network. The outage reportedly began at 6:14 a.m. this morning, and was addressed by 7:45 a.m. AT&T says that "some mobility customers were unable to connect to data services briefly early this morning," but "the issue was resolved" and service has been restored back to normal.

Adobe says Android 4.0 ICS will get Flash Player support by end of year

Those who were lucky enough to get a Google Galaxy Nexus in the UK and other countries where it launched last week might have discovered that the phone does not have Adobe Flash Player pre-installed, and the app is not available for download from the Android Market. Apparently, Adobe has not upgraded Flash Player to be compatible with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich just yet, but, fret not, as the company claims that an Ice Cream Sandwich version will be available before the end of the year.

Amazon offers tons of smartphones for a penny, iPhone not included

Amazon's wireless store is having one of its major sales again, and this time you can get nearly every smartphone offered by the company for just a penny with a new two-year contract - iPhone excluded, of course. Amazon is offering many Android and Windows Phone 7.5 smartphones from Verizon Wireless, Sprint, and AT&T at the discounted price, including high-end models like the Motorola DROID RAZR and Samsung Galaxy S II. Additionally, those that purchase a smartphone with a mobile hotspot feature and sign up for the hotspot service when they buy they phone will get a $100 gift card from Amazon. The hotspot promotion only applies to new lines of service and ends at 11:59 p.m. PDT on November 28.

Google Galaxy Nexus smartphone arrives in Canada on December 8

The Google Galaxy Nexus is set to make its debut in the Great White North on December 8, as Canadian carriers Bell and Virgin Mobile have announced the availability of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich smartphone. Both carriers will ask 160 CAD (US$155) for the Galaxy Nexus when customers sign up for a new three-year contract. We still don't have an official release date for the U.S. version of the Galaxy Nexus coming to Verizon Wireless, but the December 8 date has been rumored before, and this news of a Canadian launch may lend a bit of weight to that date.

HTC Wildfire S smartphone lands at MetroPCS

MetroPCS has announced that it is now carrying the HTC Wildfire S smartphone. The Wildfire S is the first HTC for MetroPCS, and it features a 3.2-inch, HVGA (320 x 480 pixel) display, a 600MHz processor, and Android 2.3 Gingerbread with HTC's Sense interface. MetroPCS is selling the Wildfire S for $179.99 without a contract, and the phone can be used with Metro's $50 per month or $60 per month unlimited plans, the latter of which includes the Rhapsody Unlimited Music service. Customers can purchase the phone online or at MetroPCS locations now.
