HTC G1 Gets Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich Port [Courtesy of XDA]

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 12:41 PM PST

It seems that some crafty developer has set out to prove Google and HTC wrong by showing them that it is possible to run ICS on devices that have “incompatible hardware”. Some fella going by the name jcarrz1 over at XDA has posted a video showing the oldschool HTC G1 of all devices, running a build of the latest Android 4.0 software.

As you will notice in the video below, the G1 seems to be struggling fairly bad at completing rather menial tasks such as swapping from screen to screen and opening smaller apps. I am not sure you could call this port usable and I don’t foresee many people dying to get their hands on it. Regardless, this is a huge feat and I don’t mean to downplay the success because I was truly impressed to see what jcarrz1 and team have accomplished. Great work guys, I am curious to see what’s next!

Jump past the break to check out the video for yourself and be sure to let us know what you think.

Now that you have seen the G1 in action, which device would you most like to see receive an ICS port?

Verizon Announces Android 2.3 Gingerbread Update for DROID Charge

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 10:41 AM PST

Just yesterday, Verizon announced that the official Android 2.3 Gingerbread update for the Droid Charge was ready and will be pushed out sometime in the near future. Although Big Red made the announcement, they failed to include a changelog to give us an idea what to expect, until today. Verizon posted the full changelog this morning and it looks like the Gingerbread update will do the Charge some good.

The update should improve the device immensely and a few noticeable differences will be a couple of UI tweaks and improved speed and stability. The changelog says that improvements have been made to the GPS so I am hoping the device will not take 5 minutes anymore to lock on to a signal. A new download manager, “running apps” tab, and visual voicemail has also been added as well as improvements to the phones camera and sound output. Overall, if you have been having issues with your DROID Charge, I think this update will suit you well.

The new build is number EP4 and according to the rumor you can look for the update beginning November 29th. I have a feeling this will roll out over a short period of time so be patient, I too have a DROID Charge so I will be keeping a close eye on this one and will let you know as soon as the update rolls out.

Go here for more official details and you can check out the full changelog after the cut.

Amazon Free App of the Day: Bonzai Blast

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 08:20 AM PST

Amazon App of the Day: Bonzai Blast

Today’s Amazon Free App of the Day is Bonzai Blast. Similar to the PopCap game Zuma’s Revenge, or Zuma Deluxe, the game offers the same type of game play. For those that haven’t played those titles, the basic premise of the game is to shoot colored marbles at a string of other similarly colored marbles before they reach the end point, causing you to lose the game. When you get  three of the same color marbles in a row, they disappear  and you get points.

While you play this game, you can get various power ups that allow you to put the marbles in reverse or even get rid of a single color of marbles entirely. The touch screen aiming takes a little bit to get used to, but once you do the game plays relatively well. I haven’t seen any sluggishness on my Razr at all. The game also played well on my Xoom, but screen was stretched and the graphics were blurry. This is expected as the game description does say that this game is not optimized for all tablets.

This 4-star rated game normally costs $1.99 so I recommend getting it today. You can do so by clicking here, or getting it from the Amazon Appstore for Android. If you don’t have this money saving app already, you can do so by checking out our Quick Tip here.  This is a great game to pass the time with if you are looking to kill a few minutes. Hit the break below to check out the screenshots and let us know what your opinion is.

Asus Transformer Prime Gets A Video Walk-through, Shows Off Hardware And Software

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 12:42 AM PST

If you’re not sick and tired of hearing about the most anticipated tablet of the year, then you might want to check out the video demo of the Asus Transformer Prime below.  The Transformer Prime touts Nvidia’s new Tegra 3 chip set and comes packed with a slim as hell keyboard.  Check out the hardware as the review gets close and personal with a detailed walk around on the hardware and a sweat tour of the software.  Note how smooth the home screen is despite the busy live wallpaper going on in the back ground, courtesy of the doings of a quad-core CPU.  According to the gentlemen reviewing the device, this is pre-production software and hardware.  The device is currently running Android 3.2.1 Honeycomb, not ICS.  However, if you want to see the device running ICS, head here.  Again, nothing new with this particular version of Honeycomb but the video will give you a nice run down of the hardware for the ultimate appeasement.  So, until December some time when this monster is unleashed, these videos will just have to suffice.  Feel free to let us know what you think of the device in the comments below.  Enjoy the video.

Droid 4 Launching On December 8th Along Side The Galaxy Nexus?

Posted: 24 Nov 2011 12:13 AM PST

We’re not sure who’s in charge of release dates, but it would appear that someone needs to get their act together.  Is Verizon really gearing up to release the Droid 4 the same day the Galaxy Nexus will be debuting?  If that’s the case, December 8th is going to be a busy day as well as a confusing one.  Our friends over at Droid Life got wind of a tidbit that apparently reveals Big Red has every intention on releasing the two devices simultaneously. In addition, and aside from the Galaxy Nexus, the Droid 3 just came out but a few months ago.  In any event, recall back in Oct when the device leaked and then earlier this month we caught wind of the handset showing up in Verizon’s database.  So, it’s extremely possible that we could see the device before Christmas even though the Droid Razr has barely had time to settle into the hands of the masses.  In the meantime we’ll have to see what comes of all of this over-time Motorola has been putting in.  Feel free to leave your thoughts in the comments below.  Hit the break to see the reported specs of the D4 and all of its offerings.

Specs:

  • 4″ Super AMOLED Advanced display
  • Full 5-row "illuminated" keyboard
  • RAZR styling
  • 4G LTE
  • Non-removable battery (maybe)
  • Android 2.3.5
  • 1080p video recording (assuming 8MP)
  • Front camera
  • HDMI out
  • MotoACTV syncing

Unlocked Galaxy Nexus Now Shipping in America

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 07:31 PM PST

Sometime next month we are expecting Verizon to release the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, maybe you’ve heard of it? Exact launch details are still unknown but for those willing to drop 3/4 of a G for the device can get there hands on one to call their very own. Mobile online retailer, Expansys, is offering up a limited stock that is shipping now but they would really like it if you paid &749.99 for it. A bit steep for some early adopter action if you ask me, not to mention no 4G love either. It would only be the unlocked 16GB GSM (HSPA+) build that works on AT&T and T-Mobile’s 3G networks, but I guess you could at least show it off to your buddies until they one up you with the 32GB 4G version from Verizon next month, but hey, who am I to judge. If you are ready to live the Ice Cream Sandwich dream, and got 750 duckets to burn, your unlocked Galaxy Nexus is only a click away.

Verizon Lands Trademark For ‘Hologram’ Name

Posted: 23 Nov 2011 06:23 PM PST

It looks as though Verizon may be preparing to launch a new device sometime in the future with the name ‘Hologram’, as a recent trademark filing suggests. Although no specific details are known, Pocketnow suggests the possibility of a new 3D device.

With both AT&T and Sprint offering 3D handsets already, it would make sense for Big Red to join in the competition. Although we have no idea what kind of device this may be, handset or tablet, we may just end up seeing a re-branding of a device that is currently on the market. Either way, we will refrain from making further suppositions and will definitely keep our eye on this name. Stay tunned as we will let you know as soon as we hear more.
