Windows Phone Marketplace zooms past 40k apps

Passing the 35k application mark in mid-October seems like just yesterday and now the Windows Phone Marketplace has hit another milestone. 40,000 apps and games are now available from the Marketplace, according to figures from All About Windows Phone. The site's Rafe Blandford also goes on to say that he expects the Windows Phone Marketplace to hit the 50k mark early in the new year, possibly before then if submission rates keep up their current good pace.

T-Mobile users will be able to charge Google Music tracks to their cellphone bills

Along with the official launch of the Google Music service, it has been announced that T-Mobile customers will be able to charge purchased songs from the Android Market to their monthly wireless bills. While the rest of us will have to use a credit card to purchase tunes, T-Mobile users will be able to lump the song purchases in with their monthly cellphone service. T-Mobile is also offering exclusive music for free o its customers through the end of the year. Google noted that T-Mobile customers already have the ability to charge Android app purchases to their cellphone bill, but it did not say that it would bring the music purchasing feature to other carriers.

Google Music exits beta, remains free for all to use

Google has announced that its Google Music service, which has been available in an invite-only beta since May, has shed its beta label and is now available for all to use. Additionally, Google is keeping the service free, and has not changed any of the services that beta users have enjoyed until now.

Google activates 550,000 Android devices daily, has 200 million activated in total

During a press conference to launch Google Music, Google revealed that it is now activating 550,000 new Android devices each day. Since May, activations on Android smartphones and tablets have doubled from 100 million to 200 million.

The Amazon Kindle Fire is a 7-inch touchscreen equipped Android tablet computer that runs Amazon's custom software. In this video we check out the email client and other pre-installed apps, and look at some games and a magazine, too. We also compare the Fire's browser with those found on the Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, BlackBerry PlayBook, and Apple iPad 2 to see if Amazon's browser speed claims prove true.

Google Wallet now accepted at Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic in San Francisco

Gap, Inc. has announced that it is now accepting Google Wallet as a form of payment at over 65 of its Bay Area Gap, Old Navy, Banana Republic, Banana Republic Factory Stores, and Gap Outlet stores. Customers can now pay for their clothing purchases by just tapping their phone against the receiver at the cash register. Gap did not say if it was planning to deploy the service nationwide.

Google fixes Gmail app for iOS, makes it available once again

A few weeks ago, Google promised to make many iPhone and iPad users very happy as it announced the long-awaited availability of a native Gmail app for the iOS platform. Unfortunately, the app was frought with errors - most notable of which were broken notifications - and Google subsequently pulled the app from the iTunes App Store a very short time after it was released. Apparently, Google has addressed the notification bug and fixed it, and the Gmail app for iOS is once again available in the App Store.

Samsung releases modified Galaxy Tab 10.1N in Germany

Thanks to the ongoing lawsuit between Apple and Samsung over the design of Samsung's smartphones and tablets, Samsung has not been able to sell the Galaxy Tab 10.1 in Germany, the biggest market in Europe. To get around this, Samsung has modified the appearance of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 to comply with the lawsuit and has made it available for purchase in Germany.

T-Mobile expands HSPA+ 42Mbps coverage to 11 more markets

T-Mobile has announced the expansion of its HSPA+ 42 network to 11 new markets today. The faster HSPA+ service lets users download content to their mobile devices at speeds of up to 42Mbps. The number of markets with HSPA+ 42 is now 163, with 180 million Americans covered. Additionally, T-Mobile is expanding its HSPA+ 21 network to 9 new markets, covering 208 total markets and more than 200 million people. The new markets to get HSPA+ 42 are Bend, Medford and Corvallis, Ore.; Benton Harbor, Mich.; Bloomington, Champaign?Urbana and Springfield, Ill.; Columbus, Ga.; Hagerstown, Md.; Montgomery, Ala; and Yuba City, Calif., while Corvallis, Ore.; Decatur and Peoria, Ill.; Evansville, Ind.; Holland and Kalamazoo, Mich.; Santa Barbara, Calif; State College, Pa.; and Yuba City, Calif.; are getting the HSPA+ 21 service.

Twitter for Windows Phone updated with 7.5/Mango support

The official Twitter app for Windows Phone has received a much-needed upgrade that includes support for Windows Phone 7.5 (Mango) and multiple accounts. The updated app now supports 7.5's multitasking feature, and it has improved performance across the board. During my brief tests with the app, scrolling is much faster and overall performance is much smoother. Unfortunately, the app still doesn't support Windows Phone's Live Tiles feature, and it offers no notifications whatsoever. The Twitter app for Windows Phone is free and available in the Windows Phone Marketplace now.

Leaked HTC "Zeta" makes last-week's leak sound like old news

A new smartphone supposedly coming from HTC promises to make other leaked smartphones sound obsolete before they even arrive, assuming its purported specs are accurate. The so-called HTC "Zeta" is claimed to have a ridiculously fast quad-core processor and the 720p display that will apparently be status quo for 2012.

Nokia plans to launch Windows 8 tablets next year

According to a French Nokia executive, the Finnish company will break into the tablet market with a Windows 8 device by June of 2012. Nokia has yet to release any tablet devices, and Windows 8 is a logical step since its smartphones now run Windows Phone 7.5.

Qualcomm announces upgrades for Snapdragon processor line

Qualcomm has announced that new versions of its Snapdragon S1 and S4 processors will be coming to smartphones and tablets next year. The S1 line is meant for low-end devices, but that hasn't stopped Qualcomm from pushing the performance up a notch with four new S1 chips due to arrive in the near future. On the other end of the spectrum, the new Snapdragon S4 processors will utilize Qualcomm's Krait CPU architecture, which promises better battery life and enhanced performance. The S4 chips are expected to arrive in early 2012 and will be used in next-generation tablets and smartphones.

Barnes & Noble NOOK Tablet shipping on time for this week

Not to be overshadowed by Amazon's big Kindle Fire launch, Barnes & Noble has let it be known that the new NOOK Tablet is shipping this week as well, in time for the ambiguous "by the end of next week" deadline the company put forth for itself when the tablet was launched last week. Those who pre-ordered the tablet online can expect to see it arrive on their doorsteps today, and in-store pre-orders should be hitting stores today, as well. General availability is expected for tomorrow in stores across the country. The NOOK Tablet is an improved version of the NOOK Color from last year, and features a faster processor and more internal storage. It retails for $249.

RIM's recently announced BlackBerry Curve 9380 looks to be headed over to O2 in the UK. The new BlackBerry Curve 9380 is the first all-touchscreen smartphone in the Curve family and looks very similar to the all-touch Torch 9850/9860, though with a smaller display. Thus far, the carrier has not offered any real pricing or availability date information.
