First Quad-Core Device Revealed, The HTC Edge

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 05:25 PM PST

Well I’ll be damned if TechCrunch doesn’t find this device “sexy”.  The Quad-Core processor race is on and it looks like HTC might be taking the lead with what they’re dubbing the “HTC Edge”.  The folks over at PocketNow have received, from a reliable source, a pic of the device and say it should have all of the typical bells and whistles.  The device touts a whopping 4.7-inch screen with 720p res, 1GB of RAM, an 8 meg camera with a 28-millimeter f/2.2 lens all wrapped up in a device just a hair over 10 mm thin.  And of course, the game changer is the supposed AP30 Tegra 3 CPU by none other than Nvidia, housing four 1.5 GHz cores.  ”Wow” is right.

The device is said to most likely house 32 GB of internal storage and Bluetooth 4.0.  And of course, we can expect Beats Audio to be on board for crystal clear sound when playing audio.  It’s also possible the device will release with a number of HTC’s new reported services like the HTC Listen Music Store, Bookstore and Gaming Hub.  And to top it all off, the device could be the first to rock the new HTC Sense 4.0.  No word yet as to whether or not the handset will come with LTE radios on board, as of now we’re told there is support for 21 Mbps HSPA.  Neither was there word as to what version of Android the handset will ship with.  Ice Cream Sandwich perhaps?  We’ll see.  We should expect the new device and others to follow sometime around late 1st quarter or early 2nd quarter of 2012.  Maybe we’ll see something at CES?  Thoughts anyone?

Verizon To Give Customers Double Data LTE Data Plans

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 02:10 PM PST

Well look what we have here! As if the announcement back in October wasn’t enough, our friends at Android Central report Verizon Wireless has another trick up their sleeves. As of November 8th, new and existing customers will be able to have double data plans. What does this mean? Essentially you’re getting twice the amount of data as your monthly allowance for one price. That means you will get 4 GB of data for $30 (as opposed to 2 GB for the same price), 10 GB for $50, and 20 GB for $80.

While this isn’t an unlimited data offering, it is certainly enticing to say the least. Any bump up in data allowance per month is always appreciated, especially from the most frugal of Android users. Expect to see many new and existing VZW customers to take advantage of this great deal, especially since VZW has more and more markets lined up for LTE. AT&T, Sprint, & T-Mobile, your move?

Droid 4 Rears Its Pretty Head In Multiple Verizon Databases, Launch Coming Soon?

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 12:59 PM PST

Well, just when you Droid 3 owners got your device all tucked in and settled for the night, we’ve got more news of the Droid 4’s release.  It’s possible the release is coming soon as it’s popping up on a couple of different Verizon internal databases.  The Razr like device with a physical qwerty could be Vz’s big December kickoff which would be just in time for the holidays.  It seems to be Verizon’s MO, when the device shows up in these particular databases, to be released within a month or two and since Verizon’s calendar for December seems wide open, it’s likely it could be launched then.  For now, we’ll just continue to speculate however, stay tuned as we keep an eye out for this one.  If you’ve been salivating over a Droid Razr but are not sure you can part with your precious physical qwerty, then this one’s for you friend.

It’s that time again, time to scour the Android Market for a decent Live Wallpaper.  Next in line to make the “decent wallpaper” list is Sun Rise Live Wallpaper for Android.  Nothing beats a nice looking and serene background on your device to stare at when you’ve had a long hard day.  Let the soft warm colors take you in on that long train ride home.  The Live Wallpaper offers you a “fresh and spectacular animated scene of the morning sky…” in addition to complete customization, allowing you to change settings such as the morning birds.

Atari Greatest Hits Lands in the Android Market

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 11:45 AM PST

If you enjoy playing retro arcade games from the comfort of, well… anywhere, then you are in luck! Atari Greatest Hits, the iOS smash hit, has already received over 3.5 million downloads in the App Store and is now available for download on Android devices, both tablets and smartphones.

Arriving in the Android Market with a 100 title catalogue, Atari Greatest Hits promises hours of old-school entertainment. The mother app is free to download and includes one free Atari game, Missile Command. If you want to add more titles to your collection they will run you $0.99 for a bundle of four or you have the option to buy all 25 packs for a mere $9.99. This is a great deal for that many titles but, one thing to keep in mind, the download is a hefty 42MB and may be a bit much for those of you who are low on storage. Some users are also reporting problems with the game controls, something that will most likely be addressed by the devs in the first update.

Within the app you will find all the great games from the 70’s and 80’s like Asteroids and Centipede, you’re bound to find ones that will bring back some great memories. I wont go on listing all the games here in this article, but you can head to the Android Market for the full low down. We have included screenshots, the Atari promo video, download links and the press release after the break, so be sure to check it out!

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 11:18 AM PST

HTC made a statement yesterday via Facebook on their intentions for the Ice Cream Sandwich update. A lot of us were wondering what HTC was going to do since Sense will pose a big challenge. If HTC can delivery ICS to these eight devices by early 2012, that would be remarkable. HTC is a dedicated company so I wouldn’t be surprised, and from the title of the post, they are leading us to believe this is just the beginning.

Barnes & Noble Nook Tablet is officially announced

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 10:32 AM PST

Today in New York City, Barnes & Noble unveiled the Nook Tablet which will go head to head with the Amazon Kindle Fire. As expected from the leak last week, the price will be $249, but the release date is one day later – November 17.   One other big difference is the processor. Last week’s leak showed a 1.2GHz dual-core TI OMAP, but it’s actually a 1.0GHz dual core. Unknown at the time was RAM, and today they revealed that it will be 1GB, which is more than enough.

As reported, it will have a 7-inch VividView display, 16GB of storage with the ability to increase it by another 32GB via microSD, and support for Hulu Plus, Netflix, and Pandora. Battery life is expected to reach 11.5 hours of reading time or nine hours of video viewing.

So its Amazon vs Barnes & Noble this holiday season. Any predictions?

Verizon roadmap shows week of November 21 for Samsung Galaxy Nexus release, Motorola XOOM 2 to release on November 30

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 08:41 AM PST

I know everyone is excited to hear something official on the release date for the Samsung Galaxy Nexus on Verizon Wireless. Although we do have some news, nothing is concrete.

The latest Verizon roadmap (pictured above) shows w/o of 11/21 for the Galaxy Nexus. This can be taken two ways. There is some speculation that it means “web only”, but I think it means “week of”. We’re also told that this document is a work-in-progres so it isn’t final.

Google’s Eric Schmidt: Apple Siri Poses “Competitive Threat”

Posted: 07 Nov 2011 07:02 AM PST

Google’s chairman looks to be proclaiming Google’s humility by asserting Apple’s “competitive threat”. Apple Insider reports Eric Schmidt responded to questions from the senators after a hearing in September. Schmidt writes “even in the few weeks since the hearing, Apple has launched an entirely new approach to search technology with Siri, its voice-activated search and task-completion service built into the iPhone 4S”. When addressing his previous statement in September 2010 where he denies Apple and Facebook were a “competitive threat”, Schmidt goes on to say “my statement was clearly wrong… Apple’s Siri is a significant development– a voice-activated means of accessing answers through iPhones that demonstrates the innovations in search”.
