APPY Geek News Reader App

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 12:10 PM PST

You just saw some thoughts on News Republic earlier. Now what if you are only interested in technology-related news? Well you’re in luck. MOBILESREPUBLIC has their APPY Geek app which essentially is a technology-centric version of NR. Similar to NR, you search for articles based off your topics– Android, Apple, Smartphones, Dual-Core, Gaming, etc. The topics you search for are then  pushed to you in the form of recent, noteworthy, and relevant articles. Again, you can’t view articles from your favorite technology sites, but rather are limited to a handful of technology news sources. When you find an article interesting, you have the ability to be social by sharing the app via email or any social networking site that you may have. You also have the ability to find related topics and articles based off your original article using the handy link feature.

Be sure to hit the break for the Market download link, QR code, and some screenshots of the app in action. Now go on, what are you waiting for? You have a great app waiting to find a home on your smartphone or tablet. Read More…

Verizon Galaxy Nexus Training Memo Leaked

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 12:00 PM PST

Verizon is giving more indications it will be releasing the Galaxy Nexus very soon. VZW has been notoriously tight-lipped about the exact release of the beloved GN, but there have been obvious signs lately showing the device is on its way. There’s one more indication the device will be coming soon. A tipster leaked a photo of what looks to be a training memo for Verizon employees. Clearly highlighted is an Android 4.0 online course and GN device training. This is yet another sign that we won’t have to wait much longer to get our hands on this sweet device.

Leaked Image Shows AT&T Branding on the New LG Optimus LTE

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 11:57 AM PST

Yesterday, Bell Canada customers were finally able to get their hands on LG’s new 720p HD smartphone, the Optimus LTE. For a while there we thought it would be named the LG Eye and were wondering if the device would see its way to the states since it uses the same bands as AT&T’s, both LTE and HSDPA. After all, this thing would make a great addition to Ma Bell’s 4G line up. Pocketnow reports that in fact yes, we will see this beastly LG stateside and it will be known as the the LG Nitro HD. A recent surfacing of the above picture all but confirms its imminent launch.

Possibly to be the U.S.’s first or second HD handset (depending on its release in comparison to the Galaxy Nexus’), the Nitro HD will be packing a 4.5-inch HD 720p display with 1280 x 720 resolution. This screen has been said to produce a better sub-pixel configuration than the pentile matrix found on Samsung’s Galaxy Nexus. Some other device specs include a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of ROM + microSD expansion, Bluetooth 3.0, 8MP camera and a large 1830mAh battery. Although it appears that the Nitro will run on Gingerbread, a future ICS update would make this device a top contender in my book. What are your thoughts?

Quick Look At Amazon’s Free App Of The Day: Hungry Shark Part 3

Posted: 12 Nov 2011 09:56 AM PST

Hungry Shark 3, there was two other versions of this game? Anyways, Amazon’s free app today is Hungry Shark 3, basically a “Jaws gets revenge” game. The game uses your devices accelerometer to control, that’s right, a hungry shark. You eat everything; people, fish, and even other sharks. You have to keep eating while looking for the exit or you will die.

I didn’t play much of it before I had my opinion on it. It’s free today so I encourage all of you to check it out while it is, however this is not a game I would spend the $4.99 usual price on. Maybe there is some cooler levels in the game, but it’s definitely not a game worth 5 bucks. I don’t even want it for free, this was a quick uninstall folks. Check out the images after the break as well as the download link if you dare.

Black Friday at Best Buy – More Like Tablet Blowout Friday

Posted: 11 Nov 2011 07:54 PM PST

Today on the internets, various sites took it upon themselves and outed the newspaper ads that everybody likes to study on Thanksgiving, the day before the madness begins. By the looks of Best Buy’s Black Friday ad apparently they are trying to blow out some Android tablets by reducing them to killer prices. You can snag an Asus Transformer for just $249 and a Toshiba Thrive for $279. If that is still a bit steep for our liking then how about a Acer Iconia 7 for $189, or a Pandigital Multimedia Novel 7 for a measly 79 bucks. Check out the full ads after the break below, your bound to find something appealing. They even have some good prices on smartphones too. Read More…

Verizon Galaxy Nexus Battery Cover and Battery Show Up on Samsung’s Website

Posted: 11 Nov 2011 06:30 PM PST

A few days ago we noticed that Verizon retail stores started to receive a couple different cases already for the Galaxy Nexus. Well, today we are seeing that Samsung has now even added replacement batteries and battery covers onto their website as well.

Earlier in the month we had a little bit of hope that the actual device would carry as little branding as possible. Based on the pictures from Samsung’s website, we see that Verizon has added their obnoxious logo on top of the previously pictured 4G LTE emblem putting all wishful thinking to a rest. At least the screen is beautifully vacant though, right? Now only if we had an official release date! These new website additions leads me to believe that the wait is finally almost over. Are you ready?

Facial Recognition On Galaxy Nexus Flawed?

Posted: 11 Nov 2011 06:22 PM PST

The arrival of Ice Cream Sandwich can’t come soon enough. After all, we are excited about some of the new features which includes facial recognition to unlock your device. Perhaps that revolutionary feature may also be a cause for concern. A curious Galaxy Nexus user decided to try an experiment using the facial recognition with a surprising result. Although the GN was programmed to recognize his actual face, he was able to use a picture of his face on his Galaxy Note tablet, scan the picture using the GN and actually unlock the GN. Of course the facial recognition technology is still incredibly young, so it’s not unexpected something like this has happened. Still, this marks a simple reminder that while the feature is certainly innovative and interesting, it’s not exactly the most secure. But you have to admit, that facial recognition sure is sweet though. You can find the complete demonstration of the facial unlock flaw in the link below.

DROID RAZR Root Instructions, Only The Brave Need Apply

Posted: 11 Nov 2011 05:46 PM PST

Here’s to all of you lucky-ducks who are the proud new owner of a Motorola DROID RAZR! I can imagine there are a few of you brave souls out there wanting to get just a little bit more out of your shiny new device and are looking to root already, right? If so, some dude over at Droidforums has got you covererd and has the tools needed for the task. Right now the method is only Windows operable and we’ve yet to see a custom recovery or SBF file so if you truly can’t wait to get your root on give it a try, but be warned that there is no way of going back at this point so be extra cautious.

TalkAndroid will not be held responsible for you turning something shiny and new into a useless brick. That being said, the following was taking directly from the Droidforums:

Step 1: Download and install Motorola Drivers for your Windows PC (this doesn't work on other operating systems): 32-bit or 64-bit.

Step 2:
Download DooMLoRD_v2_ROOT-zergRush-busybox-su.zip and extract contents to your PC (desktop would be a good place).

Step 3: From your Droid RAZR's homescreen, tap Menu button and enable USB Debugging from Settings > Applications > Development.

Step 4: Connect your Droid RAZR with your PC and select Charge only option from notifications drawer.

Step 5: Navigate to where the folder you unzipped in Step 2 to and open the folder and click on the runme.bat file and let it do its thing.

If you followed the steps correctly, your Droid RAZR should now be rooted on Android 2.3.5 Gingerbread.
