Kindle Fire Gets Visit From CyanogenMod 7

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 04:45 PM PST

If you are at all familiar with the rooting of Android devices and custom ROM’s, then I am sure you have heard of CyanogenMod and its CM line of custom ROM’s. CM7 has got to be one of the most popular Android custom ROM’s and can be found for both phones and tablets. The latest addition to devices seen running CM7 is the Amazon Kindle Fire. Although still in its early stages, XDA member, JackpotClavin, has posted a few images of his Fire running the CM7 ROM but it definitely needs more work before I can recommend that you try it out.

At the moment, a few things aren’t working properly like the touchscreen (rather important, no?) and the fact that you loose Amazon integration, preventing access to the Appstore and the like. On the up side though, Wi-Fi is working and if you don’t like the Amazon UI than this enhanced version of Android Gingerbread might just be up your alley. For more details about CM7 on the Kindle Fire, hit the source link below. Looks a bit rough to me so I recommend sitting on the sidelines until they get all the issues figured out, but I reckon that shouldn’t be too long from now anyway.

2 Years Later and Korea Finally Gets Games Added to the Android Market

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 03:58 PM PST

It has only been 24 months since the Android operating system was introduced in Korea and within that time the Korean market has grown to be the second-largest app consumer in the world. No matter how app hungry the market may be, you might be surprised to know that they have never even had access to games through the Android Market. Until now.

Beginning right now, Android users in Korea can access the many thousands of popular games that are available for download through the Android Market. Purchases are going to be made a bit different than what we are used to hear in the states, they will make purchases that will directly be billed through their network provider as opposed to having their market account attached to a credit card. Sounds like trouble to me!

Google wants to reach out to game developers to let them know that “now is the time to localize game resources, app descriptions, and marketing assets to take advantage of this new opportunity”. With the increased availability of apps, it is expected that a large jump in game purchases and downloads will be seen in the weeks ahead. If you are a developer who likes the thought of making a little extra dough, I strongly suggest hitting up the source code below.

Google Maps Brings It In, Now Has Indoor Maps

Posted: 29 Nov 2011 02:58 PM PST

Mall of America - Before/After

Good news for you folks who use Google Maps to find anything and everything. Google Maps just received a major update and is now at version 6.0. This update brings some pretty awesome features with it. The first one brings Google Maps indoors with you. No longer will Maps just get you to places, but it will now be there for when you get lost inside. Not sure what I mean? Check out this before and after shot of the San Francisco International Airport with the 3D effect from Maps 5.0  below, or check out the image above of the before and after of the Mall of America with Floor selector.

As this is new, not all places have their insides mapped out. Some major areas are and Google is promising to add more and more places continually. They say:

“We've initially partnered with some of the largest retailers, airports and transit stations in the U.S. and Japan, including:

  • Mall of America, IKEA, The Home Depot, select Macy's and Bloomingdale's, Daimaru, Takashimaya and Mitsukoshi locations and more. Watch an IKEA demo here.
  • Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL), Chicago O'Hare (ORD), San Francisco International Airport (SFO) and Narita International (NRT), among others.
  • JR and Tokyu Corporation

For a detailed list of participating locations, please visit our help center. And this is just the start–we'll continually add new indoor maps to public buildings across the world. If you're a business owner interested in getting your location's floor plan included in Google Maps, visitmaps.google.com/floorplans.”

These aren’t the only features that Google Maps 6.0 is toting. Other features include a top menu bar that allows for quick switching between Maps’ features (see below).

Another feature that was updated was the Places home screen. This now includes popular searches for your area.

For those of you that are interested in knowing more check out the YouTube videos below. For those that don’t have Maps or the updates installed hit the link or QR code below and for those that are still curious about these new features check out the YouTube videos.

Galaxy Nexus Back

Good news for those of you in the UK who missed out on your first chance at getting the Galaxy Nexus. Thanks to an update by Samsung, the volume rocker bug appears to be fixed. Following the issue, Samsung had to pull Nexus units from warehouses and stores until a fix was developed and phones could be flashed with it. With that fix in place, units are back in warehouses and ready for purchase. Those of you that already have the phone, don’t worry, an OTA fix will be coming shortly.

It appears that photos of the Verizon branded Galaxy Nexus are popping up out in the wild. The folks over at Droid Life have said photos and have also received information regarding an update being pushed out to test devices. This update brings ICS to version 4.0.2. It’s not known as to what this update fixes, but with the recent bugs popping up it’s hopeful that this update fixes those. Although if it has, the GSM models of the phone have not received this update. There are also photos that show the 4G LTE version’s battery life. Which when you look at them, you’ll see it’s neither that great or that bad.

So with that being said, there is still no word on the supposed pre-order and launch information we saw yesterday. Although it looks like Verizon is pushing out updates even with the phone not being out yet. Hit the break below to check out the battery life photos.
