[DEAL] Costco To Sell DROID RAZR With Free Accessory Bonus Pack

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 01:58 PM PST

Do you remember when Costco was giving a killer deal on the DROID Bionic including a free Accessory Bonus Pack for $279? Well thanks to a tip from AndroidCentral, it looks like Costco doing it again, but this time with the DROID RAZR. Included in the free bundle with the RAZR is an HDMI cable, HD dock, portable charger, and a second wall charger. Of course, you’ll need to be a Costco member to take advantage of this deal. I’d expect the pricing will be floating under Verizon’s contract price of $299 like it did with the Bionic. Who’s got a local Costco membership and locked and loaded for 11/11/11 11:11? Let’s hear it down there in the comments. Gotta love a good deal.

Adobe To Stop Development Of Flash For Mobile Browsers

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 01:22 PM PST

Before you pull your hair out just yet, Flash isn’t going away, it’s just not going to be developed further. While Adobe has made it official that they are stopping development of Flash for mobile browsers, they also made it clear there will be continued bug fixes and security updates for existing devices. Adobe’s statement reads:

Our future work with Flash on mobile devices will be focused on enabling Flash developers to package native apps with Adobe AIR for all the major app stores.  We will no longer continue to develop Flash Player in the browser to work with new mobile device configurations (chipset, browser, OS version, etc.) following the upcoming release of Flash Player 11.1 for Android and BlackBerry PlayBook.  We will of course continue to provide critical bug fixes and security updates for existing device configurations.  We will also allow our source code licensees to continue working on and release their own implementations.

Adobe’s reasoning for this is to put more resources into HTML5. What I gather from all of this is, though Flash in its current state will not be seen on future devices, we can expect to see something even better on the horizon with HTML5. I’m not sure this is anything to freak out about, but more to be excited about the cool new things HTML5 will bring to both PC and mobile devices. I’m curious to hear what you all think though. Hit up the break to check out the full press release for yourself and let us know what you think.

HTC Ville Details: Thinner Than iPhone, Includes Ice Cream Sandwich and Sense 4.0

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 12:40 PM PST

HTC is on a roll. Hot off the quad-core beast we mentioned yesterday, there’s yet another new device that will be on its way. BGR reports the Ville will be launched in April, feature Android 4.0 and be the first HTC handset to run on HTC’s brand new Sense 4.0 UI. The Beats Audio powered-phone will  feature a 4.3-inch qHD Super AMOLED display, include a 1.5GHz dual-core Snapdragon Series 4 processor, an 8-megapixel backside-illuminated camera with 1080p HD video capture and be faux-g (HSPA+) powered. Oh and the phone is likely to be less than 8mm thick. That means it will be thinner than the iPhone!

HTC is killing us with these countless leaks of their upcoming devices. By the time April comes around, it will be for consumers hard to choose which one is suited best for each individual as each upcoming phone looks to be more attractive than the next. Of course most Android users would prefer their Ice Cream Sandwich to be of vanilla flavor, but hey, maybe Sense 4.0 will surprise us all. Expect more details and shots of HTC’s Ville to slip out in the coming weeks and months.

Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus unboxing and initial hands on review [Video]

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 12:30 PM PST

The original Galaxy Tab was one of the first Android tablets to launch last year. Even though it lacked the Honeycomb love that many other Android tablets had, it’s still a favorite for many, including our editor, Joe Sirianni. Fast forward one year and Samsung is about to release the follow up, the Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus, and the upgrades are plenty. For those looking for a smaller form factor, this is the one to get. Sure the Amazon Kindle Fire and the Nook Tablet are cheaper, but this is by far a better device. This isn’t just an E-reader folks.

The Galaxy Tab 7.0 Plus features a 7-inch (1024 x 600) display, 1.2GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 3MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, and Android Honeycomb 3.2. It’s fairly thin, at 9.96mm and it weighs 345g.

T-Mobile’s Galaxy S II Suffers From Incorrect Display Calibration

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 10:28 AM PST

There is a discussion going on over at the XDA forums giving a very in-depth look at some screen problems T-Mobile’s S II is having compared to Sprint’s version. While we did our own review on T-Mobile’s S II, and having seen this beautiful screen myself first hand, no immediate problems were noticeable. The image you see above was taken with the camera shutter down to see things not visible by the naked eye. There are also two more shots after the break showing you what the screen will look like in person, one of which shows the poor contrast compared to Sprint’s. I did’t see any problems in person that would kill the deal for me owning this phone, but you’ll have to decide for yourself. The full thread can be seen over at XDA found after the break. Don’t forget to let us know your thoughts right down there in the comments.

T-Mobile LG Doubleplay unboxing and initial hands on review [Video]

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 09:48 AM PST

There might be a battle brewing for high end phones like the DROID RAZR and the Galaxy Nexus, but for mid-range phones, things are also heating up.  LG is looking to differentiate themselves with a dual-screened slide-out QWERTY for T-Mobile, called the Doubleplay. Priced at $99, this isn’t a dual-screen like the Kyocera Echo or the upcoming Sony P tablet. For the Doubleplay, the second screen is a little over half the size of the main screen (3.5-inch and 2-inch respectively), so it’s more of a compliment. It’s supposed to be a quick way to read emails, texts or control your music while leaving whatever is running on the main screen, but you can quickly move anything from the lower screen up to the main screen. The problem lies with the design as the QWERTY keyboard has to be split into two separate keyboards. It’s definitely something cool, but is it really worthwhile?

The rest of the specs include a 1GHz single-core Snapdragon processor, 512MB of RAM, 2GB internal storage with 2GB provided via microSD, and a 5MP rear camera with 720p video recording. It’s rather thick at .63 inches (16mm) and heavy at 192 grams, but is definitely unique.

We will do a more in depth review soon, but for now checkout my quick hands on review.

Verizon Wireless Samsung Stratosphere review, 4G LTE at an affordable price

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 08:57 AM PST

With most Verizon Wireless 4G LTE smartphones debuting at $299 for a 2-year contract, its difficult for some consumers to jump on the “lightning fast” bandwagon. Samsung is looking to change that with the Stratosphere. These specs aren’t high end, but for most consumers, they’re more than satisfactory. Priced at $149 makes this affordable for everyone and brings the speeds of 4G LTE to the mainstream. Here is a more in depth look, but you can also checkout our initial hands on video.

Design

This is a mid-range phone so don’t expect it to be thin. It comes in at .55 inches thick (about 14mm). Part of the reason is it has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard. Fans of physical keyboards are going to love this one as it has 5 rows and the keys are spread out nicely. I found it very easy to type.

HTC Thunderbolt MIUI Port Now Has Working Data and SMS

Posted: 09 Nov 2011 08:55 AM PST

HTC Thunderbolt owners are about to start salivating. The MIUI ROM port for is one step closer to being official for the phone. MIUI as you already know, can work on any phone including the Thunderbolt. Developers have been hard at work ensuring the Thunderbolt port of the ROM works properly before releasing to the general public. There have been various kinks and issues during the development, such as data and SMS not working properly. It certainly hasn’t taken much time to address the issues as it was announced on Twitter that “data and SMS are fully working”. This is indeed exciting news, especially considering that it shouldn’t be much longer before the ROM is released for Thunderbolt owners. Look out for the MIUI for the HTC Thunderbolt to be available any day now.
